City Council Approves Newport Beach Surf Park, Home To Orange County’s First Wave Pool

The Snug Harbor Surf Park project officially received the green light on Tuesday after a unanimous decision from the Newport Beach City Council. Snug Harbor comprises a new wave pool and surf park facilities situated within a section of the Newport Beach Golf Course, replacing three of the holes, a driving range, a pro shop, and a restaurant and bar. Despite backlash from golfers, the project now has approval to begin its 18-month construction process. A world-class surf park for the community ----------------------------------------- The Snug Harbor Surf Park will occupy about 15 acres at 3100 Irvine Avenue in Newport Beach, next to John Wayne Airport. The property will feature a 7-acre surf lagoon with two surf breaks, which can accommodate up to 72 surfers at a time. Lounge areas with viewing platforms are situated around the lagoon for people to watch the waves, and there will be three additional warming pools for guests to enjoy. Other planned amenities include a 3-story 49,000-square-foot main building with a surf academy, bungalow-style athlete accommodations, outdoor seating, a yoga center, locker rooms, a coffee/snack bar, and a spa. “The wave park is designed to flatten the learning curve and transform surfing, ” writes Snug Harbor Surf Park on their website. “...Snug Harbor will be a place where anyone, at any age, can master surfing without battling crowded beaches or unpredictable waves.” The surf park will operate 7 days a week, offering 1,000 waves per hour with 25 different carefully-engineered wave types.
