Colosseum Tickets Booking | Rome, Italy
The Colosseum was ordered to be built by Emperor Vespasian to honor victorious generals and soldiers, as well as to glorify the great Roman Empire. It was completed during the reign of his son, Titus, and has since become one of the most iconic landmarks of the Roman Empire. The Colosseum was where gladiators fought wild animals until one of them died, or gladiators fought each other. According to the Roman historian Dio Cassius, when the Colosseum was completed, the Romans held a 100-day celebration in which 9,000 animals were slaughtered. 🦁⚔️ The architectural style of the Colosseum originated from the theaters of ancient Greece. Back then, theaters were built into hillsides, with semi-circular seating areas rising up the slope. However, by the Roman era, structures like the Epidauros Theater (circa 330 BC, designed by Polykleitos the Younger) began using arches to elevate the seating. The Romans then connected two semi-circular theaters to create the amphitheater (from the Greek "amphi" meaning "on both sides"), which no longer needed a hillside for support. The Roman Colosseum is the largest oval-shaped amphitheater of the Roman Empire. It is 187 meters long, 155 meters wide, with a circumference of 527 meters. In the center is the arena, measuring 86 meters by 54 meters, with wooden flooring covered by sand. Surrounding it are layers of seating, about 60 rows divided into five sections: The front rows were for VIPs (like senators, officials, and priests). The second section was for nobles. The third section was for the wealthy. The fourth section was for regular citizens. The last section, at the very top, was for poor women— the poorer you were, the higher you sat, and standing was the only option. 👀 The seating area also had a canopy suspended by ropes, which provided shade. This canopy was tilted towards the center for better airflow and was controlled by sailors at the top of the gallery, much like managing the sails of a ship. 🌬️🛥️ ✍️Tips for Visiting: ⏰Top floor and underground tickets need to be booked exactly 30 days in advance on the official website.
