Heading South, But Seriously, No More Southern Food
Heading South, But Seriously, No More Southern Food 😫 When it comes to the twin cities of the American South—historic Charleston and Savannah—people often think of the distant colonial era, the humid heat, deep porches, oak trees stretching like eerie creatures, and countless ghost stories. 👻🌳 That’s why both cities offer Ghost Tours. As night falls, preferably on a misty evening, horse-drawn carriages carrying lanterns sway into timeless alleys. If you’re lucky (or unlucky), you might encounter the most fierce ghost—but don’t worry, all tours are just for fun and nothing truly scary happens! 🚗💨 American history is only a little over 200 years old, so as a foreigner, I find most historical sites almost meaningless. 😅 Still, both cities are great for wandering. Personally, I prefer Savannah—it’s greener, calmer, and feels more like a place where locals actually live. Charleston, on the other hand, lacked a sense of real life to me. It felt like a carefully preserved model for display. I call it “America’s own Tianjin Five Avenue”—and honestly, the resemblance is uncanny! 🏛️ Besides casual strolls, here are some attractions: St. John’s Cathedral in Savannah: Open to visitors, spectacular inside with stunning stained glass windows. A must-see! 😍🕌 Forsyth Park in Savannah: Well-maintained, grand, and very Southern. 🌳 Rainbow Row in Charleston: Don’t bother—it’s overhyped. You’ll find prettier colorful houses anywhere else. 🏠❌ Accommodation: 0 George in Charleston: A charming historic boutique hotel with beautifully decorated rooms. A bit pricey though—around $500. 💸🛏️ Thompson in Savannah: A hidden gem! Impeccable in every way. Although it’s a short distance from the historic district, the walk from the river is enjoyable. And it’s affordable—only $200-300! 🏨✨ Dining: Southern food is salty, oily, and mostly fried or mushy. Calling it “cuisine” is a stretch. 😬 I recommend having only one proper meal a day—save those calories for your health and figure! Husk in Charleston: Highly praised Southern food with excellent service. Dishes are interesting with a twist—I even detected some Thai influences! 🍛🌟 The Public in Savannah: Recommended by the hotel front desk. Definitely try their signature Shrimp & Grits. 🍤👍 And that’s… pretty much it. After wandering around Savannah all afternoon, every restaurant we passed or looked up seemed unappealing—way too Southern in both menu and vibe. So we made the best decision: headed back to our hotel! Thompson’s restaurant served a roasted chicken with mushroom sauce that was absolutely delicious. Finally, we broke free from Southern food and enjoyed something continental! 🍗💃 #TravelDiary#SouthernUS#Charleston#Savannah#FoodReview#TravelTips
