I Found Xinjiang-Style Baked Buns + Meat Pies in Madison! 🥟
I still can’t believe it — at this Indonesian restaurant in Madison, I tasted a filling identical to the beef baked buns from Xinjiang, China! 🤯 And the wrapper was just like the Xianghe Meat Pie — soft, flaky, and pan-fried to perfection. I’ve been searching everywhere in the U.S. for these flavors, and finally found them combined in one dish! This incredible dish is listed as an appetizer called Martabak Telor 🇮🇩. The outside is crispy and golden, and once you bite in, you’re hit with the rich aroma of seasoned beef and onions 🧅🥩. The filling is juicy, well-marbled, and so flavorful — it’s downright addictive! Just thinking about it makes my mouth water… 😋 But that’s not all — other must-try dishes include: 1. Satay Skewers 🍢 Tender, grilled meat (beef, chicken, or tempeh) lightly coated in peanut sauce 🥜. As a nut lover, I highly recommend these — especially the beef! 2. Sambal Goreng Papaya 🌶️ A traditional Indonesian stir-fry made with green papaya, long beans, and tempeh — surprisingly delicious and stands up well next to any meat dish. Tempeh (fermented soybean cake) has a firm texture and mild taste, somewhere between tofu and feta cheese. If you like either, you’ll love this! A few dishes like the Mango Curry 🥭 and Fried Shrimp 🍤 were a bit too sweet for my taste, but my boyfriend loved them. Recommended if you prefer sweeter flavors!
