Jumping on the bandwagon at the DMV’s trendy izakaya 🏮 Genki Izakaya

Takowasa wasabi octopus is bouncy and refreshing, but the portion is not large. Sashimi sampler with 6 thick cuts is generous and affordable. The fish quality is not bad, but it’s really quite average. The Sea Urchin portion is surprisingly big for $13, but it has a strong smell of disinfectant and a hint of bitterness 🆘. Tonkotsu Ramen is neither here nor there; best eaten while hot. Uni Chawanmushi has finely chopped crab meat, and the texture of the steamed egg custard isn’t smooth. The sea urchin quality wasn’t great to begin with, and it’s even less palatable after being steamed. Grilled items ordered: chicken gizzards, chicken legs, pork belly, grilled eel, and Shishito peppers 🌶️. The grilled eel is quite salty, but the rest are passable, not bad but not great. The restaurant’s decor is a modern blend of American and Japanese styles, quite new. I didn’t order any alcohol today because my stomach wasn’t feeling well. About $60 per person for a full meal, pretty reasonable. The trendy Japanese cuisine in DMV is truly a letdown; don’t follow the trend blindly. It’s a 40-minute drive from DC, quite disappointing, probably won’t come back for a second visit. Well, maybe I’ll come back in the future to try the drinks and sukiyaki 🥘. #FoodRecommendations #WashingtonDCFood #DMVRestaurantHunting #FoodDiary #DMVFood #TonkotsuRamen
