Kandy Local Style: Hiking in Flip-Flops

Day 17 of volunteering at a Kandy hostel. Today was a day off, so I went hiking in the Hanthana Mountains around Kandy with my colleagues. The 12km hiking route, which takes eight hours round-trip, involves trekking through jungles and climbing rocks. Imagine my laughter when I saw one of them wearing flip-flops 🩴 and the other in a suit 🤵! We didn’t even bring water or food... None of us knew the route... In the end, it was a failed attempt. They said they knew the route before we left! Not one of them was reliable. But we still had an alternative hiking experience. Because we took the wrong path from the start 😅😅, we wandered 2km in a tea plantation for an hour before finally getting out. Then we realized the correct path was in the other direction from the entrance where we came in... So we started climbing again. After climbing for half an hour, we reached a famous temple. But since locals need to wear all white to enter the temple and they weren’t dressed appropriately... we didn’t go in. After eating a few bites of corn, my colleague couldn’t walk anymore, so we went down the mountain and took a ride back to Kandy 😵‍💫. It turned out that all the buses at the bus station here were chartered by tour groups. There was no public transportation to get back, not even a tuk-tuk... So we walked another 3km back to the city. It counts as hiking 5km anyway. What a fun day.❤️ If you also want to go hiking in the Hanthana Mountains, you can search for 📍 Hanthana Hiking Road on Google Maps as the starting point. When you arrive here, you’ll see a white temple with many tourists, and there are shops selling food around the temple. This is the best hiking route around Kandy with stunning scenery.😊 It takes half an hour by tuk-tuk from Kandy city, and there are buses to get there, but there’s no guarantee of a bus back. Although I didn’t finish the hike, I have a route guide. You can send me a private message. It’s not recommended to go alone; it’s better to go with a partner.😊 #KandyLife #Travel #SriLankaTravel #KandyEsalaPerahera #Kandy #SriLankaHiking #VolunteerTravel
