Kansas City 3-Day Itinerary: What to Do in KC! 🌆
I spent three summer days exploring Kansas City (KC)—a unique city split by the state line, with the west in Kansas and the east in Missouri (where most attractions are). While many visit KC on a road trip, it’s also a convenient flight hub—being near the U.S. geographic center, you can fly almost anywhere domestically in under 3 hours! ✈️ I flew with Southwest Airlines, but a thunderstorm in NYC caused a 7-hour delay ⛈️—we even had to deplane before finally taking off! 🎖️ Day 1: History & Culture WWI Museum: Kansas City won the bid to host the National WWI Museum (while WWII went to New Orleans). The circular exhibition hall is filled with artifacts, including classic wartime posters. Union Station: A historic train station with original architecture, a working post office, and plenty of charm. Send a postcard while you’re there! 🎨 Day 2: Art & Local Icons Nelson-Atkins Museum: Its collection rivals top East Coast museums! Don’t miss the Chinese Pavilion, featuring the stunning Water-Moon Guanyin statue and an intricately carved wooden ceiling. The giant shuttlecock sculptures outside are perfect for photos! Harry S. Truman Presidential Library & Museum: Located in Independence, MO (KC’s eastern suburb). Tip: Book a tour in advance—we only saw the exterior. 🐦 Day 3: University Town & Famous BBQ University of Kansas (KU): A 45-minute drive to Lawrence, KS. As a basketball powerhouse, KU honors James Naismith (inventor of basketball) with a statue on campus. Soak in the college vibes! 🏀 Jack Stack BBQ: A KC classic! Their smoked meats are legendary—try the Kansas City Combo with beef ribs and lamb chops (extra cost). Make a reservation—it gets packed! Princess Garden: A popular Chinese spot in South KC. Their Peking duck is a hit, though ours was a bit salty that day. Also book ahead! Whether you’re into art, history, sports, or food—KC has surprises waiting at every corner! #KansasCity #NelsonAtkinsMuseum #KU #BBQ #WWIMuseum #TrumanLibrary #TravelGuide #ExploreKC
