Kyoto • Kitano Tenmangu Shrine 🌿
Located in the northwest of Kyoto, Kitano Tenmangu Shrine is an ancient shrine with over 1000 years of history. 🌿🌟 Unlike the dazzling orange torii gates of Heian Shrine, the torii gates at Kitano Tenmangu are made of stone, uncolored, and exude a solemn atmosphere. 🌟 The ancient trees lining the approach, along with the moss-covered stone lanterns and stone tablets, all add to the mysterious aura of the sacred domain. 🌇 🌿 Kitano Tenmangu was built to honor Sugawara Michizane (845-903), a scholar from the Heian period who is revered as "Tenjin-sama." 🌿 There are over 12,000 Tenmangu, Tenjin, and Sugawara shrines in Japan that enshrine Sugawara Michizane, and Kitano Tenmangu, together with Dazaifu Tenmangu in Fukuoka, serves as the head shrine for all Tenmangu shrines in Japan. 🌟 #Kyoto 🌿🌟
