Leipzig | A Journey Through History & Music 🎶🏛️
This weekend, my family and I took a road trip to Leipzig—just over 100 km from Berlin. 🚗 A city once called "Little Paris" by Goethe! While Dresden is often the go-to in eastern Germany, Leipzig was our second stop, and it did not disappoint. 📜 Leipzig is the second-largest city in Saxony and was also the second-largest city in former East Germany. Known as a city of trade fairs 📦, it hosts international exhibitions every spring and autumn. It’s also a city of books 📚—home to the Leipzig Book Fair, which ran from 1632 until it was overtaken by Frankfurt in 1945. 🎵 But above all, Leipzig is a city of music. Bach served as cantor at St. Thomas Church for over 20 years. The famous Gewandhaus Orchestra has been performing for more than 200 years! We even stumbled upon a spontaneous open-air student concert while strolling through the city. 🎻 🏫 Leipzig University—founded in 1409—is one of the oldest in Europe. The campus beautifully blends historic ruins (like a preserved church framework) with modern architecture. It’s the second-oldest university in Germany, after Heidelberg. ⛪ St. Nicholas Church (Nikolaikirche) isn’t just architecturally stunning—it also played a key role in the peaceful demonstrations that led to the fall of the East German regime in 1989. A powerful symbol of freedom. 🪦 The Monument to the Battle of the Nations (Völkerschlachtdenkmal) is another must-see. This massive memorial honors the soldiers who fell in the 1813 battle against Napoleon. A city of culture, music, books, and bravery—Leipzig is full of surprises. Perfect for a weekend escape filled with history, art, and harmony. 🎶❤️ #Leipzig #StThomasChurch #BachMuseum #Nikolaikirche #TravelGermany 🇩🇪✨
