Washington’s First Ukrainian Restaurant – A Delightful Surprise! 🇺🇦✨
I don’t often head to the southeast part of DC, but while I was in the area, I stumbled upon this highly-rated Ukrainian spot—Ruta Ukrainian Restaurant—and decided to give it a try! Located not far southeast of the Capitol, it’s surrounded by other eateries and offers easy street parking. The sign out front says “Washington’s First Ukrainian Restaurant”—it opened in April 2023. The vibe is relaxed outdoors and elegantly cozy inside, with subtle, refined decor. No national flag in sight, but you’ll find flag-inspired cocktails! 🍸 First time trying Ukrainian cuisine, and every dish impressed! Drinks were great too. 😊 🥟 Varenyky (Dumplings): Similar to Russian or Polish pierogi, but tastier! Not dry at all—moist and well-filled. They’re small and delicate, with four filling options—I loved the cabbage one! 🥬 🥗 Ruta Salad: The namesake salad! Just ordered it for some greens, but it was surprisingly delicious—flavorful and not oily. We finished every leaf! 🌿 🍗 Chicken Main Course: Forgot the name, but it’s a Ukrainian classic recommended by the server—we went with the classic version (mushroom is another option). Crispy fried outside, tender and savory inside, with a rich but not greasy filling. We devoured it! 😄 🍯 Honey Cake: HIGHLY RECOMMEND this dessert!!! Not too sweet—perfect for those who prefer subtle sweetness. No need for more words—just look at the photo! 😄 It’s rare to find a dessert we finish that fast! Overall, highly recommend this place! Both meat and veg dishes are flavorful yet not heavy—just right. Dessert was a win too! If you’re nearby, give it a try—great area for a stroll after your meal. 🚶♀️💫 Ruta Ukrainian Restaurant 327 7th St SE, Washington, DC 20003 Have you been to Ruta or tried Ukrainian food before?
