Wish I’d Found It Sooner: House of Tricks – Amazing American Cuisine

Last week, to celebrate my proposal getting approved, I visited this charming garden restaurant—and instantly fell in love with it! 😍 It’s located on 7th Street, just half a mile from Arizona State University (ASU). While waiting in line, we got the surprising news: this restaurant has been in business for over 30 years, but it will close permanently on June 25th. So my friend and I went back two weeks in a row to savor it—everyone should come try this final taste of deliciousness before it’s gone! 1. Cocktails 🍸 We tried 4 different cocktails over our two visits, and the one I highly recommend is the Killer Bee ). It’s a perfect blend of fruity and creamy flavors, mixed with rum. True to its name, after just half a glass, I started feeling tipsy—and crashed as soon as I got home! 😂 2. Appetizers 🥙 Do NOT miss the Spiced Mussels ()! I talked about this dish nonstop for a whole week after trying it. Honestly, it was the first time I’d had such tender mussels in Phoenix—I was so thrilled I almost teared up! 🥹 The sauce was rich and fragrant, soaking into every bite of the mussels, making it impossible to stop once I started. 3. Entrée 🍝 You must order the Pork Volcano Shank in. It tastes a bit like braised pork hock (a classic Chinese dish), but the fatty parts have been removed—so it’s not greasy at all, and even feels healthy! 🐷 The clever part is the sauce: it’s mixed with cheddar cheese, which is fried to a crispy golden. The crunch adds a lovely smoky flavor, and it also cuts through any potential heaviness from the cheese—total perfection! 4. Desserts 🍮 Nearly every table orders the Caramel Apple Bread Pudding. Unfortunately, we were way too full after our main courses to try it, but next time (and there will be a next time!), I’m definitely saving room for it.
