Brasserie des Facultés — Restaurant in Alger-Centre

Wow, the couscous here is beyond delicious! One night I had lamb, the next chicken (both not the prettiest presentation, but basic is good in this case). The order comes with a big tureen of vegetable soup that you spoon over the couscous, it’s a meal in itself. The staff is animated and opinionated— they refused to accede to our request for white wine with our lamb, insisting that their Algerian “President” red was the best to order (or maybe they were out of stock of white wine?)— it did...

Total disaster. We waited for lunch for an hour and a half. The food was terrible and the steak was cold. At the end we received a bill that was 33% higher than the prices on the menu. During a week of visiting different cities in Algeria, this was the only place that was so bad. In every other Algerian restaurant the food was delicious and the prices were affordable. Great little restaurant in the heart of Algiers. Classic french bistro food (to include great seafood) dominates the menu. Alcohol is served - the local Koutoubia wine is both tasty and cheap (by US/EU price standards). Staff is super friendly. They do allow smoking, which bothers some but was fine...
