Have heard some pretty mixed reviews but for my first visit I was pretty happy with the overall experience. I came with some foodie friends and we ordered mainly from the newspaper specials (they literally give you a copy of their newspaper ad with the specials!): Special combo set A with fresh live lobster (free e-fu noodles), live perch, and poached free range chicken, $125 A grade fresh live mud crab ($34/500g, got 1.5kg) with vermicelli noodle served in hot pot (+$20) Lamb in clay pot, $63.80 - with free beef slices and seasonal vegetables Kangkung dish (didn't get exact name) Rice complimentary soup of the day
Total came out to be about $50.50 per head and nobody left hungry. I quite enjoyed all the seafood dishes, with the standout probably the crab cos the flavours in that were full on and not a style I've previously had - would definitely recommend.
The chicken flavour was alright but I found it overall quite bony. Don't think I'd get this again unless it happened to come in a set. Probably wouldn't get the lamb clay pot again either - nice to try and quite a big serve, but will stick to/focus on seafood items next time.
Notes: unless seafood items are specified as fresh and/or live, then they're frozen a number of items were not available, eg we were going to order the family combo but the whole combo was off the table cos it included frozen crab, which they'd run out of recommend bookings, and checking availability beforehand if you there's a specific item you want to order the restaurant has two mostly separate rooms - if you enter by the front door (where the counter/bar is) and don't see any diners, it's probably cos they're all in the next room and those doors might've been shut when you...
Read moreThe first time a friend told me to try out this place, I was wondering: Is there an 'old three bamboo' restaurant? Or a 'new two bamboo' restaurant? Or maybe the parent company was named 'old one bamboo', and the first branch was 'slightly new two bamboo'? Will the next branch be called 'newer four bamboo'? Since then, I've eaten there four times, but haven't come closer to solving the mystery of the name.
Of course, all that didn't matter as soon as my food order was served. The food is really good, and probably among the best prices for seafood in Brisbane. I really love the crab (the salted egg is very very evil), and the wife loves the pipi (it can be spicy - be warned).
In fact, you know the seafood is fresh because you can ask them to show you the crab/lobster that will soon end up on your plate. I took the opportunity to educate my children the potential hazards of holding a crab with bare hands.
Their non-seafood dishes also taste really good, and come in generous portions. One serving of ee-fu mushroom noodles keeps the kids happy (and quiet) so I can enjoy my crustaceans.
It's still a mystery to me how they aren't rated higher on Google - it's almost impossible to get a seat on weekend dinners without a prior reservation.
Do give me them a try.... Maybe I'll ask them about the mystery of the name on my next visit. I know I'll be...
Read moreWe 5 of us went there for dinner last night. The restaurant had virtually no table service at all. After we had the soup ,we'd like some clean bowl for our food. No waitress around ,and I walked inside to request some attention, guess what,I was told to go over to side cabinet n get it myself (not acceptable as we r diners in your restaurant, no in a communal kitchen). For the seafood, it was a bit misleading from what they advertised on the local newspaper. They posted a very attractive price on lobster, Mub crabs, Coral trout, etc, but when you sat down ,the price was different, very dishonest. The steam coral trout was also disappointing ,chef just didn't have the required culinary skills for the delicate seafood Other dishes were okay, average overall. So ,if you want a good dining experience, pleasant dinners with your friends or families, pls think twice before going there. We certainly walked out , all shaking...
