We had a wonderful dinner at Piallago on Thursday evening. The ambiance is lovely, the service possibly the best I've experienced in years(the staff were friendly and relaxed but very attentive.) We never felt rushed, I really appreciated that, the 2 hour slot always feels stressful but the pace actually felt leisurely and just right! I enjoyed the wine selection (local wines are wonderful) Most important, the food was superb! Everything we had was delicious, the flavours were complimentary and sometimes surprising in a good way! Stand outs for us were the field mushroom starter, the duck was SUPERB, and the chocolate mousse. I actually, being mother's Day weekend, went out to 3 different restaurants this weekend and Piallago was 100 percent the best! My only point of improvement would be the actual table. We were in the far left corner of the room and instead of a small table for 2 we were at a larger oblong table usually for 4-6 but set for 2. It was fine but it felt a little uncomfortable to lean over the width of the table to converse. I would have preferred a smaller table, or set the couple on a diagonal not opposite each other. Doesn't reduce my rating of 5 stars. This is the first "fancy" restaurant in Australia that has earned its stripes for me. Worth the...
Read moreThank you for showcasing the beautiful food Canberra has to offer to our o/s guest. From the personal welcome & attentiveness of the wait staff & the quality of food, it made quite an impression. My husband & our guest thoroughly enjoyed the raw wallaby which they said was tender & quite delicious. The whiting & beef cheeks were our mains and both were enjoyed. The fish had a lovely delicate flavour and the beef cheeks were tender beyond belief. The heirloom carrots with humous were magnificent, quite a taste sensation. I ordered the beetroot pastrami & it was a unique taste surprise I quite enjoyed. The mint was a lovely fresh balance against the pastrami. And the creaminess of the feta was a perfect contrast. There was a jam like addition in the middle, which added an intense peppery taste to the dish. I felt it overpowered the beetroot & I ended up trying to remove it. Perhaps consider serving it on the side of the plate as a ‘dollop’ so it can be added to suit the customer’s palate. The hazelnut parfait was delicious & the warm lemon & milk cake had...
Read moreWe arrived on time, as a courtesy to the staff and were promptly seated. We spent a few minutes checking out the dinner menu and the extensive beverage menu. Once our orders were taken we had time for a very pleasant conversation together about our 46 years together as husband and wife. The entrées arrived and we were not disappointed. The beetroot pastrami was refreshing with just the right combination of textures and flavours. The artichoke with spanner crab was delightful with just the hint of sweetness from the crab with the crunch from the artichokes. For the main course the King George Whiting was served with Warrigal Green and Anchovy butter. The fish was cooked to perfection, the greens still had just the right amount to crunch and the anchovy butter was salty without being overpowering. The Ricotta Gnocchi with Roast Pumpkin was superb. It was just what a good gnocchi should be. Overall, the staff were knowledgeable about the menu, attentive without being intrusive and made for a...
