My mother and I drove all the way from Clyde Victoria to enjoy a late 50th Birthday lunch with my brother, We arrived on time for our 12pm booking at the Avoca Hotel, the doors opened slightly late a few minutes past 12 to let the wait staff in, we followed through the door next in line after them, the owner never greeted us on arrival, being my first time there I asked him if the first room on the left was the Bistro area to which he abruptly replied “it’s the Bar“ we don’t have a Bistro! “we have a dining room” I thought this a rather rude comment to make to one of his customers and not the warm welcome you’d expect especially from a country Hotel, we were left to find the dining room by ourselves as he never told us where it was located, he just continued on with what he was doing. My mum had a seniors fish and chips, she said her fish and chips with salad on the side was very nice (she actually got a proper salad with radish, cucumber, lettuce and onion on the side). My brother and I both ordered the porterhouse steak at $49 each; I asked for mine to be cooked medium rare and it was medium to well done, flame grilled with a nice flavour but not cooked to order, the chips were good but just a handful and the menu said it came with salad on the side 😫😵💫 what we got was a merger serve of mixed lettuce like you get from the supermarket, very lack lustre and no dressing to speak of, extremely disappointing indeed, i’d expect better for the price🙁 I feel if the menu states salad it should come with a salad not lettuce on the side, Menu stated the meal comes with chips and salad, if it’s just lettuce the menu should say so. (The menu said served with chips and salad and it was chips and lettuce). I called the young female waitress over who was very pleasant both girls serving were very pleasant I advised the waitress I was disappointed especially with the meal being served with just lettuce and Not being a salad as stated on the menu, she said she’d let the kitchen know, i’m not sure she bothered to mention it to the cook, as no one came out to our table to see us. My brother asked for his steak to be cooked rare and running off his plate and I asked for mine to be medium rare, I would not even say his was medium cooked, closer to medium to well mine was more well cooked, both of us were disappointed in the meal but my brother chose not to say anything. we shared a bottle of over priced wine $45 loaded at least $20 on top and was no cheaper than buying it by the glass. I wouldn’t bother returning again city prices and merger portions. Total spent $176. my mothers meal was a seniors meal at around $21 which was reasonable. I have read many good reviews on the Hotels website here with some bad ones too, however I have noticed the owner tends to criticise, blame and attempt to justify bad reviews by stating “other customers say they love our food,” rather than apologise or ask what he can do to fix a bad dining experience? I feel this is a very poor business practice. why not just admit that sometimes you get it wrong all his attitude achieves is more ill feelings from your unsatisfied customers. There is a lot more work to be done to make this a better business or a place I would return to. The one star was for my...

Told on the latter phone call by one of the staff that they were "running a bit behind" and make it about 7.30 rather than 7.15. Group of 18 duly arrived at 7.30 to find the place a complete shambles. Girl said they had a gas failure at 5.30 which had put them behind and we could wait or eat in the scruffy bar later on. Asked the guy with the silly hat who appeared to be the manager why we weren't told of this fiasco at the time I confirmed the booking at 7.00 pm and received a contradictory and supercilious reply that the previous person we spoke to didn't know about the problem ( Yeah right!! - What planet do you think I came from Charlie? - I call it lying!!) Said it wasn't his fault so like it or lump it. The place had been hopelessly over booked!!! Charging 5 star prices with small town capability, bare laminex tables and sardine can room layout. . Dodge this try hard joint and spend your money where you get pleasant surroundings capable management and honest communication - oh yeah and decent food. Had great pizzas at the place across the road and saved $1300...
Read moreAn excellent and affordable wine list featuring a great selection of local Pyrenees wines. A nice selection of beers on tap and quite a few bottled and canned options. This was the highlight. We indulged in bottles of wine and an ale each with our meals. It gets very busy on weekends, so I definitely recommend booking. They ran out of fish and chips during the evening, but there were other good options, so we were not put off by this as it was a busy night.
There are tables outside on the main road - with umbrellas to protect you from the heat if you go for lunch.
Pretty good pub grub. We were a table of 4 and had the Thai beef salad, pulled pork burger, chicken parmigiana, and parmesan crumbed pork schnitzel. The two pork items were the best. The three dishes served with chips would have been improved with hand cut chips, but for a pub, frozen chips are pretty standard. It is definitely worth a stop when in the area as it is a nice old hotel with a...
