On 09/11/2024 I stood in line to buy pies from the Smithâs Pies pie cart at the Salamanca Market In front of me were three Chinese tourists A bleached blonde white woman with tattoos was serving The first customer a man asked for a scallop curried pie, in perfectly understandable English, the woman aggressively demanded $11 the man handed over a ten dollar note promptly and held out a hand with change, he hesitated for a moment not sure which coin was appropriate and the woman raised her voice said âTHAT ONEâ and snatched a single dollar coin from his hand, curtly dumped his pie on the counter and barked âNEXTâ at the couple behind him, who gave their order in equally clear English and when told the price in the same ugly tone, ready with money in hand passed her a $50 note, the next words out of her mouth uttered with delicate disdain were âJESUS CHRISTâ She served me with maybe 50% of the same crudeness I ordered a bbq pulled pork pie which tasted like nothing but had nice texture My partner had a chicken and leek pie which she didnât like I had a bite and didnât rate it either, pastry again had very nice texture We both had a scallop pie each and we thought they were okay at best My review is this, these Chinese tourists, and tourism in general are basically all this city has going for it financially, appart from borderline unregulated ravaging of the states natural recourses, this city is beautiful, but everywhere I look in between the successful business are shut down ones, office spaces above store fronts are empty, and if there are international tourists who have CASH and want to spend it at YOUR business and the businesses of your fellow Tasmanians you should perhaps treat them with courtesy and if you cannot manage that then just muster base level human decency because the pies arenât that good and I ainât recommending...
Read moreYou can find this pie and pastry maker just off the Highway between Hobart and Port Arthur 18km east of Hobart or in a square shaped caravan in the middle of the Salamanca Markets every Saturday. They have a large array of the most interesting pies and sausage Rolls you are likely to find anywhere. For many years I had heard of curried scallop pies and now I have had the opportunity to try some whilst in Tassie. These made by Smiths Pies are the best I have found. A distinct curry sauce that does not overpower the generous amount of scallops in the pies. I have tried one from a couple of other makers including my No from the Richmond Bakery which has an even milder curry sauce but this one is the best! Also available in a mornay presentation served as all of their pies in a this flakey crisp casing.
Well done pie makers, the cooks and the...
Read moreHad Smithâs scallop pies (both the OG and curried) at QVM in Melbourne for the first time in June. Enjoyed them very much. Booked a weekend trip away to Hobart from QLD to have it again. Went to Salamanca as soon as we had flown in and they were sadly already done for the day. Realised they had a store near the airport anyways so made sure it was the last thing we had before we flew off. Each got a curried scallop pie despite having had Richmond bakeryâs curried scallop pie 2 hours earlier in the morning. Bought some frozen ones to take on the flight home.
Nuff said, youâd be silly to miss this spot in Hobart (unless you have their curried scallop pies at...
