Citizen Cafe — Restaurant in Melbourne

Stopped by on a Sunday afternoon for quick lunch, cafe was empty and we managed to get a seated very quickly. There wasn’t a heap of variety in terms of choices for first meals, most dishes sounded very similar to each other.

Cow - Baked eggs with chorizo sausage served in a pan with fetta, green beans, herbs & light rye. Tomato relish on the side. • Bread was very hard, really struggled to eat it. Toasted way too long honestly. Everything else was okay. Could’ve used a little more tomato relish.

Donkey - Poached eggs with sourdough, baked bacon, fresh spinach, shaved parmesan, cherry tomatoes & homemade aioli. • Ordered 2 Donkeys for the table and was honestly greatly disappointed. Poached eggs were not cooked the traditional way (was more like a hard boiled egg but cooked outside of its shell), egg yolks were all cooked through as seen in pictures. The baked bacon was overdone to the point of no return - extremely hard and dry. The sourdough was toasted way too long as well, did damage to the roof of our mouth. Salad was fresh though.

Rosella - Chicken salad with avocado, cherry tomatoes, walnuts, croutons, cranberries, aioli & a drizzle of honey. • Salad was very fresh, chicken wasn’t bad, nicely seasoned. The croutons tasted great but was way too hard (crunchy?). The elements paired well together.

Use Padre roasts here for coffee, it was alright. Nothing mind blowing.

We did notify the waiters that the food “could be better” and as compensation received a couple pastries - 2x Danish, 1 blueberry muffin, muesli bar and a lemon slice. Muffin was nice and moist, not too sweet or dry, the pastries aren’t as flakey as i hoped it would be (some parts were hard), muesli bar was nice though.

Brilliant Family owned and run Cafe in Murrumbeena 😁 I'm all for family businesses and I Love these guys! 🙏🏽 So friendly and welcoming, and to top it off the food is exceptional! Some of the menu options have secret family recipes that are to die for 😍 let's get to the food shall we 😎 . PANCAKES ARE EPIC! 😳 . I can't help but about how phenomenal the pancakes are! 😍 Buckwheat pancakes that are crisp and crunchy on the edges and fluffy heaven on the inside! 😇 The consistency reminds me of banana bread. It has a grainy wholemeal texture that had me cleaning up the plate in no time 😏 The texture is amazing! Throw that in with a gorgeous scoop of marscapone and caramelised banana and you've hit a slice of absolute contentment 😉 I wasn't however the biggest fan of the poke bowl 😔 there was definitely something missing in there.. There was a homemade sriracha sauce that it comes with which is legit PHENOMENAL! 😱 But I think the addition of a Mayonaise based sauce as well would be ideal in bringing together all the ingredients and keeping the taste fresh 😁 the value for money is great! Generous servings of delicious food and a reasonable price 👌🏽the pancakes are the reason for the arnie special of ILL BE BACK! 😎 . 💡 TIP - GET THE PANCAKES! 🥞 don't even think twice...

Walked by this cafe at 7:40am to explore the possibility of getting a couple of take away coffees. Let me repeat, my husband and I, WALKED BY, we didn’t even attempt to go into the cafe and the owner, who according to their website is an individual named Jansen, proceeded to BELLOW at us through the window that they weren’t open until 8am. Fair enough, it’s pretty early, except when we peered inside, there was a customer in there getting served who left the store with a tray of coffees. So, were they not open, or just ‘not open’ for us? If this is what ‘community spirit’ and ‘3 decades’ of service delivers, it’s pretty appalling.
