Food: We were served tuna tartare that smelt and tasted so fishy it was inedible. The waiter asked the kitchen and admitted it was at least two days old. I’ve eaten a lot of tuna sashimi in my time and this was not fresh at all, it shouldn’t have been served and was definitely a health hazard. The dish was not removed, not were we offered a different option.
We also had mussel and octopus potato gratin. The seafood had a defrosted taste to it and again was inedible.
For mains I had a wagyu fillet. It was served on a jam relish that was so over powering it ruined the dish. The meat again was not fresh and didn’t taste good, I couldn’t finish it.
My husband managed to eat his fish dish.
We didn’t bother with desert.
Wine: Wine list is very tired and dull. Essentially only Rob Dolan or wine from the Chateau Yerring, all very average but drinkable.
Atmosphere: The restaurant, hotel and grounds are incredibly tired and run down. The whole place needs a complete refurb and repaint. Chairs are worn, with fabric fraying and seats losing their bounce. Wooden furniture is a scuffed and chipped. Paint on the walls is patchy and worn thin.
The restaurant looks onto the hotel gardens which are dull. I’d hate to think what the rooms were like..
Service: Was ok, but on par with the surroundings. Definitely not at the level for the Yarra valley and definitely well below Melbourne standards.
Given our complaints we were surprised to be charged for the starters, upon raising the issue we had some money taken off. Essentially we paid ~$200 ($60 for wine and $140 for two mains). Far too expensive for toilet quality food and ambiance.
All up: This place is EXTREMELY run down and tired. It has good bones but needs a complete refurb, new management and a new FRESH (not frozen) menu.
Do not recommend, in fact due to the risky tuna serving I’d suggest to others to stay well away, this place is a...
Read moreWe enjoyed an overnight stay at Chateau Yering celebrating our 20th wedding anniversary, and booked dinner at Eleonore’s Restaurant.
The restaurant itself is opulent and charming - beautifully furnished and decorated to fit its 1800 yesteryears.
Old buffets and tables, lovingly polished, are set against tall, rich deep burgundy walls. The flowing drapes are exquisite in every detail, finished with elegant swags, tassels and trims. A simply beautiful setting.
We enjoyed a 5 course degustation menu, a delicious showcase of the chefs’ culinary flair. The Buxton trout was the highlight for us - beautifully cooked, deep and rich in flavour, rounded off with an unforgettable crispy skin.
Dessert was pure delight on a plate! A strawberry tart, deliciously thin and crisp with a hint of gingerbread. Inside was an exquisite jellied strawberry layer followed by a smooth pistachio ganache then topped with a cool, fresh strawberry sorbet. Divine.
There was a vast wine selection and across the night we loved sampling glass after glass. Why not on 20 years!
Service was professional and attentive, yet friendly and authentic. Table service was a definite and memorable highlight of our stay.
We highly recommend Eleonore’s to celebrate a special occasion or simply for a shared indulgence...
Read moreBEWARE OF BUYING A GIFT VOUCHER FROM CHATEAU YERING. We purchased a high tea voucher from Chateau Yering in May of 2024. After some attempts to book this and confusion about the expiry date, which we were led to believe was May 2025, we were informed it was too late to use it. After further investigation and a discussion with Consumer Affairs Victoria we were informed that the voucher SHOULD have been valid for 3 years at the time of sale. We contacted Chateau Yering again to query this and they informed us that the voucher would have been purchased through a third-party and to follow it up with them. We looked back at our records and found that Chateau Yering Syd Australia was listed on the transaction of our bank statement (not a third-party seller) and the receipt was sent directly from Chateau Yering (once again, no mention of a third-party). I have since contacted them on two more occasions to see if they can provide details of this supposed third party who they said sells vouchers on their behalf, and they have not responded. The vouchers were $160 for both in total. Disappointed that my elderly parents were not able to enjoy this high...
