Selera 'Malay Hawker Food' — Restaurant in Melbourne

This place has bigger kitchen than the seating area. You can actually see the kitchen & everything which was lower than the seating area. When we came on Sunday noon it was busy, and they seem to only have 2 staff which made them look stressed trying to keep up with things. Not surprising when you ask for little things (glasses , a bottle of water), they might take a while because they are too busy and sometimes forget. The place is old but the way the kitchen laid out, it somehow reminds me of grandma’s house. But if you aren’t used to Asian culture, this might not be appealing to you. You can either buy nasi campur where you can choose 3 dishes from the already cooked bar, or get meals freshly cooked. The menu itself isnt big, and of course very traditional Malaysian. I tried their nasi campur because I wanna try their little dishes. I ended up with their pippies curry, fried chicken and veggie curry. I love their fried chicken, it was tasty and moist inside, just perfectly cooked and seasoned. The pippies curry and veggie curry were mild tasting. They said the pippies curry is spicy but it’s super mild. I feel they watered it down to cater for people here which was rather disappointing. Their sambal was hot though, although not my favourite flavour-wise. Also tried their roti which was nice. Overall it was a cheap lunch, only about $15 per person. Googled Malay food and came across this eatery. Went to try out on a Saturday. Had “nasi campur” and “lontong”. Taste wise not bad. Price listed on “nasi campur” was not transparent’. It’s stated $15 for any 3 pre-cooked dishes and confirmed by owner. However, when made payment, was told it costs $17 - reason bcoz one dish I picked was fish. It would be good to highlight the extra $ for fish in the pricing.

Find the older owner very rude. Saying I had no time to “layan” you (entertain you) when I was deciding on what to order from the menu. As a whole not a very nice experience. Both owners are not that friendly as reviewed, in fact both are quite fierce towards customers. Not a nice feeling, especially for first time customers trying out a new...

We were in the area and decided to patronage this restaurant. We arrived at about 11 am Saturday, and it was quiet. We were the only customers. My wife decided to have the nasi lemak, and I ordered two meat (beef rendand and chicken curry) and one veggie with rice option from the bain maire. The beef was cut so thinly, and the lady, behind the counter, started cutting it with scissors. The chicken drumstick in the curry was super small, and the curry was so watery and tasted bland. The sambal on the nasi lemak tasted burnt and watery as well. All the food served tasted like leftovers from the previous day. We did not enjoy our experience...
