Please attention !! Usually I am a regular customer here. I ordered take away order today. I told clearly to staff, my take away food might be under mom’s name or could be my name in Korean. Then, that staff gave me wrong order to me and I paid the cash payment without confirmnation of details of number nor food. Then, the owner told me to bring it back. Lucky I havent even touched nor ate the food due to friend was coming to eat with me. When I got there, the owner was being so rude and yelling at me and blaming me for taking the wrong order. Forced me to apologize to customer who has same name as me then. I shouldnt be asked to come back in the first place! She told me to never come back again just because I wanted a refund! I didnt get refund of cold food. She didnt want to refund my money and argued with me in front of the casheir and forced me to take the cold food when i didnt want it at this point. The restaurant owner forced me to say sorry because of wrong order picked up where I spent time coming back to brought food back even I have paid for. However, this action was not being any treated intentionally done to any other related customer.owner told my mother faulse information that my mother scolded her on the phone call. But My mother was having meeting with others that time so there is clear evidence and witness with her being not even scolded the owner or nor any bad lauguage was abused through the phone call. The owner was fraustrated badly on the phone call more than my mom and used unpolite manner to her by questioning her “why are you not picking up your food?” Your daughter took wrong food and the real customer is here what are you talking about!” Is this even right way to communicate to customer on the phone call? What do you mean by real customer ? There is so many common first name in Australia ! My point of this review was no matter what food was picked up with incorrectly, staff also not checked and told the owner, she showed me every food from the bag which you can check cctv where the owner lady keep referring to me with confidence. Staff must been scared to tell the owner. Even their take away receipt does not have the (name) list of the food that I paid for but only total of amount food was printed. Is this also customer’s fault ? The lady owner’s language and her communication was really inappropriate by using intense volume to me. At that time, people were still eating well in the restaurant. and staff was serving well, too. I have not disturbed anyone there. The owner, She is the one tried to maximise her voice at the cashier and told me “ I dont want you to come to my restaurant” then, give me the refund? but the owner did not process refund. This situation was not intentionally done. The owner could been handle situation better instead of telling me yelling at me for abusing power where I only asked for refund for the cold food where I did not even eat nor take. I did not want to even eat and scold me for what am I going to do with you take away? I am not making any faulse statement here. The owner, She always scremes to her staff in the restaurant too. Last time when i vistited with my friend, the owner told me her staff had long holiday and forgot side dishes to put into right plate because her staff served with wrong dishes on stainless plate ( sauce plate) which was not making our dinner experience any bothered. We saw the owner was scolding her staff “ what is wrong with you “ in front of customer. This is why staff scared to tell the owner she didnt check and confirm honestly. I loved her food there since 2019 and found her nice but this incident occured and was the worst experience ever. For being few times and years customer with suga restaurant, one time this take away situation led this awful service, thereby, business of suga restaurant’s image has been tarnished and shameful. The owner was the one who had loud voice where my friend also recognised of her. According to the owner lady told me “not to come back to restaurant”I thank you for being...
Read moreEdit: We have since revisted, they have changed to QR code ordered which was awesome. One of the younger waitresses was a little bit unfriendly when we accidentally ordered the small milkis and wanted to change to the larger one. I have updated this review back to 4 stars from 1. Really hope to visit again soon!
——————— I love this place and didn’t want to give it a negative review because the food is genuinely so delicious. But today’s service was appalling. We had to ask for the ordering sheet, had to ask for cutlery, had to ask for bowls, had to ask for rice, had to ask for an extra one single stick of chopstick because the waitress didn’t give us the correct amount, had to get our own water, had to ask the waitress to help us clear some empty plates from our table despite her seeing them as she was talking to us, had to wait 30 min for our table despite booking because the waitress messed up and seated people at the wrong tables.
If you’re delivering food to a table and you notice they have no cutlery or bowls isn’t it common sense to get some? The waitress just walked despite noticing this and we were essentially micromanaging the waitresses the entire meal.
It’s such a shame because I was in the other day as well with my friend and we had such a wonderful experience.
I noticed the sign at the reception counter that said staff are doing their best and it gave us the impression the two younger waitresses are very new and people have also had similar experiences but lost their patience.
A better system for booking and a better system for which plate of food belongs to which table would be better. It’s not a good look having a waitress walk to a table, the table say it’s not their food and the waitress going to the counter to look up which table the food belongs. It’s not hygienic wandering around the restaurant with food.
It was my dad’s birthday dinner and we chose Suga and it was a disappointment. The food was and will always be top notch but service needs some...
Read moreWe have been coming here for 5 years or so. Suga is an authentic, reliable Korean restaurant which is well known to locals but (thankfully) is an undiscovered gem, which means there is usually seating for walk-in customers. Over the years, the staff have turned over several times, but the food is the same and the service has always been friendly and exemplary.
What they do well: any of their stews, any of their tofu dishes, any of their fried chicken. The dumplings are great. They make their own tofu on site, so it is super fresh and tasty. I especially recommend the spicy tofu stew. The tofu in it is to die for. The purple rice they serve is perfect, I can't think of anywhere else in Melbourne that has a nicer rice texture than Suga.
What I am not so sure about: they are unapologetically authentic, which means you will find some Korean dishes that may not suit your palate. I was told by a Korean friend that Korean food is actually like this. So be careful if you order the Soondae (Korean blood sausage). I found the jelly-like texture and metallic flavour off-putting, but it's meant to be this way?
In our dozens of visits over the years, they have been consistent. There was only one hiccup many years ago (a slightly undercooked pancake) which they quickly rectified. Otherwise, to be able to do this night after night for years and be so consistent is amazing.
In short, this restaurant is authentic and excellent. There is nothing actually bad about the place, only dishes you have to be careful about ordering in case it's too...
