Veloce Pizza bar in Carlton North we believe is a hidden gem. It’s only 10 months old but don’t let that detract you from what they deliver in terms of quality food. Rami, the owner, has been in the pizza game for a while with his takeaway shop in Pascoe Vale being in business for 10 years.

Now their restaurant in Carlton North is beautifully fitted out, moody lighting perfect for a date night, soft music playing in the background adding to the ambiance, and coupling that with the excellent service made for a great first impression upon walking in.

Being taken to our table we ordered a bottle of white (no fizz this time? Yup, we broke the mould) and started with a charcuterie platter and freshly baked focaccia. Service was quick and even though their restaurant was half full on cold a rainy Thursday evening, their take away orders were flying out the door.

The charcuterie platter was very generous, quality cold cuts of prosciutto, leg ham and salumi, with some bocconcini and pickles. Can’t go wrong with quality cold cuts to get your appetite going and then the focaccia, with rosemary that was freshly baked was an absolute stunner. Chewy, fluffy, tasty and hit all the right notes. Nothing better than making your own mini paninis, one bite at a time with the charcuterie platter. If the focaccia was anything to go by then the pizza bases and crust would certainly be up there with some of the best ever had.

To be honest we were getting full on the starters so we ended up sharing a pizza and a salad. We ordered the SALSICCIA pizza with toppings of san marzano tomato, bocconcini, mushrooms, Italian pork sausage, shaved paremsan and fresh basil. We also asked for some fresh hot chilli on it too to add some fire. For the salad we ordered the fig and rocket salad with balsamic and cherry vinaigrette.

So let’s talk pizza, damn son, a magic flavour combo, and on a pizza crust/base that was thin, and with a fluffy crust with the right amount of char and with excellent chew. A beautiful pizza to say the least. They weren’t shy with Italian sausage either, usually at other places they place a few bits here and there, but at Veloce they literally gave you the whole sausage and more. Brilliant pizza and very satiating. The pizzaiolo sure knows how to make some great pies. We were also looking at the other pizzas being served and they looked tremendous.

The salad, we love a good salad, and never had fig and rocket before. Let’s just say that the salad was fresh and tasty, zesty and sweet, the roasted walnuts added texture, and a decent serving size. It was marvellous. We think the salad itself could be a pizza topping itself. A salad pizza? Well this salad is more of a meal than an accompaniment. Very impressive.

Overall we were thoroughly impressed with Veloce, and this has been the 7th pizza joint we have dined at on our mid week pizza tour of Melbourne. We highly rate this place and surprised it’s not as well known as the others. Deserves more kudos.
