Hunter & King — Restaurant in New South Wales

It had a line longer than an Aus v Eng Test Match in the summer, but I thought why not? It must be good right? Wrong.

The expat working on the till was probably working to 50% of her capacity which is completely appropriate for an airport cafe, especially given there was a line extending to the security screening section. “This place must be good,” I thought. “The coffee must have cocaine in it,” I thought. Either that or the barista pats you on the back and tells you you’ve lost weight while she makes your brew. What is the big deal?! I had to find out.

Having missed breakfast I decided to stuff my face with 2 meals. I ordered a B&E roll and a ham and cheese jaffle (because I’m on a health kick) and a flat white.

During the course of the ‘reheating process’ I noted that the roll was placed in an oven. Courageous move I thought, but these guys are professionals right? Wrong.

I received my jaffle and coffee. I figured the roll would take longer right? Wrong

After some time I got worried. I asked one of the girls to check on my roll, which by this time would surely be hotter than the surface of the sun. She opened the door to find the roll blacker than the ace of spades.

The lady who put it in there looked at me. It went down like this: “Sorry.” “Yeah, I was watching it for a while.” “Well you should have said something!” “Well I didn’t want to tell you how to do your job.” “Just say something. It’s not telling me how to do my job.” Amazing.

Like Bill Burr once said in his stand up, “I pay you 100% of the money to do 100% of the job.” If I’m telling you to take the roll out of the oven then I want some of your wages.

The B&E roll tasted like a busted sand shoe. With BBQ sauce. Dysfunctional cafe.

Imagine arriving on a cold, foggy day to board a scheduled 7am flight, getting through the airport checkin to join the queue for a morning coffee. Luckily the flight was delayed to account for the coffee delay! Waited 40minutes for a coffee at Hunter & King, went up and the order wasn’t on the list. Very poor customer service with the follow up. They said to get the to go to the other coffee shop, Coffee and Vine, which is attached to the same coffee shop, and they will process it quickly. (So you really can’t escape the poor service, as they’re the same people) Upon getting the coffee, it was so bad! I’d even go as far to say, Undrinkable, which is a the honest truth. The coffee was burnt and tasted like a hot bucket of dishwater, so I assume the coffee machine was not flushed or had cleaning product… at least it was hot to warm the hands. Come on, what a sad excuse for a coffee experience for traveler’s locally...

This place is pretty good. Like the chicken schnitzel Turkish bread. Very tasty and crunchy. Pretty good food for Airport. But for me the girl that was serving this night was amazing. She was all alone serving everyone making all the food and coffees with an amazing smile and very friendly. This just made the whole experience so comfortable. Specially after a whole week in New Castle for a business trip, after being so tired and about to get home. This is was great. Thank you for your service today.
