Visited the Bistro at the hotel for lunch today. Bistro staff were very lovely and helpful, but unfortunately that’s where it ends. I had already looked at the menu before arriving to check if they offered gluten free ( I’m coeliac) options. Lots of GF options on the menu which was great BUT only a couple of items were “coeliac safe”. We were advised the menu was only new (by 1 day), and items that are marked GF ( salt and pepper squid, chicken katsudon) are not actually gluten free as they are cooked with the gluten items (fish, chicken schnitzel) in the same cooker or deep fryer. I asked what would be GF and Coeliac safe on the menu and was told I could only pick from a few of the GF marked items such as the steak, chicken supreme, duck breast and the pork nachos ( not marked GF though). The waitress said they are going to reassess the menu even though the current menu is new. The menu definitely needs to be altered to indicate what’s truly gluten free. I know at the bottom of the menu it mentions that the kitchen handles food such as shellfish, gluten and nuts and that reasonable efforts are taken to accommodate guest dietary requirements, they cannot guarantee that their food will be allergen free. I feel it is misleading if it is advertised as GF but not. GF food should be prepared and cooked in a separate part of the kitchen with a separate fryer. Hope this review helps anyone else who is Coeliac or is gluten intolerant, when visiting this location. I was very disappointed with the choices as a coeliac.

The Shortland Hotel hosted a South African night when South Africa played the Wallabies. We paid $80p/p to attend but man was it worth it. They served real South African dishes. They served 5 entries, 5 Main dishes with salads and 3 desserts. The big surprise was that every person at every table received 1 each of all the foods that were served. We ate until we rolled. The food was delicious!!!! The atmosphere electric and the rugby superb. What a treat!!! We’ll be back.

hubby and i came here for lunch and we are so mindblown!! came during lunch and got the giant schnitzel with mash and salad, squid and cheesy garlic bread, ciders and cheesecake. everything was SO GOOD and fresh and the portions were generous. this will officially be our go to pub - the cheesecake especially, i will personally sell my soul to get that a fridge full of it at home 24x7. thanks Shorty hotel! we will be back!

If you're after a no fuss place to rest your head then you can't find a better place to stay in Newcastle.

The check in is a breeze as Sam and the rest of the staff are super nice and easy to work with.

The rooms (though basic) are a 10/10 for cleanliness, comfort and have everything you need. There's free parking on site (huge carpark). The wifi is free (no password required) there's air-conditioning, bar fridge kettle and TV in your room (microwave and toaster are available in the communal kitchen)

I've been staying in one of the single shared bathroom for nearly 3 weeks and in all that time I've only ever seen another person in the bathroom three times since being here. The bed is really comfortable and even the single bed has 2 fluffy pillows.

I can't recommend this place highly enough

The self locking doors. REMEMBER to always have the key on your person so you're not locked out topless at 130am (so my...

We have visited The Shorty a number of times and are always satisfied, however our latest visit is noteworthy. It was the last night to use a Dine Voucher. Place was packed. Kitchen and staff were run off their feet. We stayed. Food came out sooner than what we were told to wait. Everything was cooked perfectly and an abundance of veg while other places have been scrimping and substituting cheaper veg. Our meals were perfect.....again. Through the chaos of the visit we noted that all the staff remained calm and friendly. They were run off their feet. On the way out I called over one of the two chefs who stopped what he was doing and came out and with a smile. I praised him and all the team and thanked him for a great and organised job mainaintained by all of them. Well...
