One does not merely pass through Port Wakefield — one makes a cultured pilgrimage to Kipling’s Bakery, a beacon of culinary sophistication amidst an otherwise uninspiring stretch of highway. While lesser travellers may balk at the early-morning queue winding outside its doors, refined palates understand that excellence demands patience. Naturally, I selected the chilli cheese kransky, arguably the only sensible option for those with even a hint of gastronomic discernment. The pastry arrived with a delicacy and structural integrity that would put most Parisian pâtissiers to shame. The cheese was of a richness one simply doesn’t anticipate in regional South Australia, and the chilli — a restrained yet confident finish — lingered like a well-delivered closing argument. Watching others hastily devour sausage rolls and vanilla slices with reckless abandon, I couldn’t help but feel quietly superior, knowing I had chosen the grandly — a pastry that clearly separates the connoisseur from the common commuter. In summary: Kipling’s is not just a bakery — it is a brief but glorious reminder that true culinary excellence can appear where one least expects it. To overlook it would not just be a mistake… it would be uncivilised.

I recently got a pie from here, and to be honest, it was just okay. The dough felt a bit undercooked, and as you can see in the photo, this was the condition of the pie in under four minutes. Unfortunately, a large amount of tomato sauce was added (I said yes to tomato sauce but not half a bottle) which made it quite soggy and I even ended up eating part of the paper bag by accident. It might be worth considering a different type of packaging that holds up better if the pies tend to be on the softer side. Also, a friendly smile while serving customers can really make a difference in the experience.

Our wait time was self imposed as we struggled to decided which of the incredible pies and pastries we would choose. Seethed on a bacon, egg and cheese pie which was incredible. A beef mince and potato pie which was packed with flavor, and a cheese and spinach pasty which was a-max-ING! I have a honey stick still to eat, but I have no doubt that will be amazing as well - even if it has mock cream! I may be driving an hour one way from now on just to get pie 🥧

So I rate this bakery as my #1 pick for food, it is awesome. But, if you want logic, go elsewhere. I have never met a business so opposed to good business practices. The shop front is dingy, dark and uninviting and the business hours make me think they don't like making money. What bakery only opens at 8am when paying customers come through at all hours. At least open at 6am. I also suggested at busy times, regular customers get served promptly as there is often a long lineup and industry like ours is time critical, we cannot lineup for ages. I am disappointed with the attitude of the owners over all as this business could be a popular franchise if...

Excellent service, smiling faces despite how busy it was, fast getting through the line up. Food was great, only gave 4 stars for food as it's mock cream used in all their cakes, real cream would have been next level. I presume it's mock as their cakes are in a cupboard as opposed to a refrigerated cabinet for the short time they're waiting to be purchased. Vanilla slice, choc eclair, satay chicken pie and Cornish pastie purchased. The pastie was very heavy on potato which was a little disappointing when there are plenty of other budget friendly veg that can go in as well however taste great! Pie was amazing! Would definitely return. $25 for...
