My friends and I inquired, "What's for smoko today?" "I saw a new roll store on the corner down the road on the way here." "Beautiful lets try that" Just another smoko store, we reasoned, how erroneous could we all possibly be?
Now, before I get started with the review, let me just say that I've been a tradesman in Geelong for the past 12+ years and have had a few thousand smokos from places like Warrnambool, Ballarat, Bendigo, Rockbank, and Heidelberg. I have no idea where in the hell Heidelberg is, but it's on the list and it's checked off.
We step into the void. It's difficult for me to describe the happiness I felt as the soft yet crispy tiger bread roll met my lips and I took the first bite, everything from the bread to the vegetables to the meat is done so with absolute excellence. I may not be a religious man, but $2 for spring rolls is the closest I can come to paradise. i would gladly spend $12 for a bah mi tiger bread bun, but you wouldn't cavil about a $9 bargin. the bao bun the magnum opus the centerpiece of the chefs food for $9 Three exquisitely designed and textured bao buns, with tastes ranging from chicken to pulled beef and pork.
To say that this is among my all-time favourite smokos is an understatement considering how fantastic this place is and how cheap it is. I will always refer to this establishment as the crème de la crème of smokos and will go to any lengths to have lunch here if I'm in the...
Read moreBest bánh mi I've tried across Geelong and Melbourne including both 4.7-star rated joints in Springvale. I've tried 3 other joints in Geelong and 3 in greater Melbourne in the quest for bánh mi nirvana, this might be as good as it gets. The tiger bread is the best ever, pork is the best, and if you prefer veggies then the Springvale ones are better as you get less meat and more veg in them.
The pho is decent as well. Note that the soup is way oilier than typical pho soups and I like it this way as it has good mouth feel. Those preferring a lighter clear pho soup might want to reconsider.
The ice coffee is pretty average. Pass.
There's some sheltered seats and a few parking spots. If you're creative you can park a truck or Ute and...
Read moreUnknowingly, we arrived as they were closing, but they still happily took our order. They were very friendly, and even let us stay to eat at their tables as they closed up. Everything was clean, the food was quick, the ingredients were decent and for a reasonable price too. The only downside is if you want to eat on site because there's loud traffic from the intersection just out the front around this time. Probably better to take away at busier times of the day. Although, nothing bad about the food, it just wasn't to our more traditional preferences for Vietnamese food. However, I can still recommend it for a good quick bite, good sized portions, fairly priced, and I'm sure it will be much healthier than most take...
