Run, don't walk, to Toodyay bakery!
Because they are selling what may very well be the greatest Pepper Beefsteak Pie in Australia...
Buttery, flaky pastry, that is not too thin, and a top that is not too dry? Check! Chunks of tender, gristle-and-fat-free steak - and not just one, but a pie packed full of these morsels? Check! Surrounded by a gravy that is thick and dark, so dense you can stop halfway through eating your pie, turn it upside down over your head, and not a drop fall out (yes, I did do this party trick to impress my son)? Check! And the flavour - not some wimpy is-this-even-a-pepper-pie??? subtlety, but an in-your-face PEPPER! flavour that is intense without being overpowering? Check!
This is Peppersteak perfection.
There was only one left in the warming cabinet when I finally got to the counter - the queue was 8-deep the lunchtime I visited - but when I asked, they friendly young lady serving me was happy to put another three in the oven for me, with just a 3 minute wait for them to be ready.
If this savoury delight is not enough to make you want to trek up The Valley from Perth, then can I tempt you with an Apple Pie?
No just any apple pie, but a huge dome of a pie, as high as it is wide, packed with tart diced apple, in a sweet jammy filling, along with sultanas - yes, just like an apple danish.
And the pastry? Having been blown sockless by the savoury pie, I feared the dessert version may be sub par. How wrong could I possibly be? These pies have the most amazing buttery crust, that crumbles in your mouth like shortbread. Incredible.
This is no ordinary country town pie shop. This is baked goods Nirvana. Be warned! If you go there and try these pies, you will want to keep coming...

Stepping into Toodyay Bakery feels like stepping back in time, where the pace is slower, the air fresher, and the food well, downright legendary. Don’t be fooled by the town’s small size; the bakery punches far above its weight.
We worked our way through a proper feast: the steak and kidney pie (rich, hearty, and unapologetically old-school), the sausage and spinach ricotta rolls (a surprisingly elegant take on comfort food), and a chicken and vegetable pie that reminded me of Sunday lunch in pastry form.
For something with kick, the jalapeño brisket pie brought smoky heat and slow-cooked tenderness, while the African Berber pie was the wildcard—spiced, bold, and unlike anything you’d expect in a country bakery. It’s adventurous, and worth every bite.
Of course, no bakery trip is complete without sweets. The apple crumble pie was rustic perfection—chunky fruit filling under a buttery lid—and the apple turnover was the kind of classic you could eat two of without shame. Both felt like hugs disguised as pastries.
Verdict
Toodyay Bakery isn’t just good "for a small town" it’s good full stop. It’s proof that passion, tradition, and a little creativity can turn a humble bakery into a destination. If you’re anywhere near Toodyay, skip the petrol station pies and head here instead. Trust me, you’ll leave plotting...
Read moreHaven’t been here since 4ever!! I was blown away by how this bakery has changed. Last time it was just one small shop on its last legs. Now it is 2 shops plus upstairs and a lift for elderly/physically challenged. Upstairs dining and toilets. Wow. ! Now onto the staff. It’s very hard these days to find genuine young friendly staff who enjoy their job. Very efficient as well. The food. WELL what can I say. It has something for every taste and budget. Bonus freshly baked Artisan Breads as well. I chose the whole meal sour dough which was sliced for me. I will choose the Spelt bread next time for sure. The Barrista was very busy but managed to get out coffees in 10 min. The ricotta and spinach rolls we had were sooo good and to finish off we had good old vanilla slices. You are spoilt for choice. We arrived at about 10am . Great timing. On our way back home we saw lots of people driving to the town. Certainly be back . Only took 1 hour...
