Being in Shepparton on business, I had a faint memory that somewhere in Shep held the Best Vanilla Slice award....multiple times. Thank goodness my memory served me right. A quick google search had me here in a jiffy. And I can confirm, it certainly doesn't disappoint. Having purchased a Lamb and Rosemary pie, along with a sausage roll (didn't need it but had to try it, looked too good not to) and of course had to top it off with the award winning snot block. Oh. My. God. All 3 were absolutely delicious. As you can see in the pics, the snot block doesn't disintegrate when you eat it. Cannot fault this place, hidden in an industrial estate. A must visit when in town 100%. Pie 10/10. Sausage roll 10/10. Snot block 10/10.

Vanilla slice was indeed good. Not overly sweet, pastry very nice wafer-like. Carrot cake was so bad I couldn’t eat it; it mystifyingly reminded me of dead ants! What is the item I bought from you this morning (other than inedible) if not carrot cake? Cakes were cling-wrapped which is very unusual for a bakery; sucks for the planet. Nowhere inside to eat.

Well, as a tourist, I'd heard about the award winning vanilla slice in Shepparton so a visit in order. And not let down. The slice itself had crunchy firm pastry, enough but not too much icing, and light yet firm filling. A delight. Service was friendly and customer focused. Atmosphere, well, nothing like the genuine place in an industrial area.

Jun 2025 On another road trip through Vic we had to stop by North End Bakery for their delicious pies and vanilla slice. This time we were prepared with an off grid set up for freezing our beloved vanilla slice to take home to Brisbane.

We tried the Bushmans pie which was absolutely delicious. It contained beef mince, bacon, egg and cheese.

We also had the mushroom pie, which was my favourite. It was creamy without being too heavy. Nice chunks of beef with mushrooms in a creamy sauce.

Lastly we bought three four packs of vanilla slice. These are a MUST try! Photographed is my pup giving his tick of approval.

The staff were friendly and happy for a chat.

North End really is a must visit if you are in the area, so much so that we took our time travelling through nsw just so we could be in Shepparton on a weekday when the bakery is open.

Sep 2023 We popped into this quaint little bakery on our way through Shepparton on our journey towards The Great Ocean Road. We ordered a sausage roll, plain meat pie, bacon and egg pie, caramilk slice, caramel brownie, and of course the award-winning vanilla slice.

The sausage roll pastry was flaky and the filling was delicious. One of the best I have had.

The meat pie was very flavourful and I loved the thin pastry casing.

The bacon and egg pie was my favourite savoury item of the three. It had a smoky barbeque-like flavour and was very enjoyable.

The caramel slice was not too sweet and had a nice biscuit base.

The caramel brownie was fudge-like and had a lovely caramel filling. If you like caramel this one is a must. It's not too sweet and I loved it.

The vanilla slice was my favourite sweet item. The icing was not too sweet, the pastry was lovely and flaky. The highlight is the custard filling, it was light and had a whipped texture. It was so delicious I purchased two, four-packs to gift to friends in Melbourne. The sweet items are individually glad wrapped, I found this small detail to be a lovely touch. Made everything easier to eat and mess free.

What stood out the most was the warm service and friendly smiles I was greeted with. This bakery is a must-visit if you are in the...

Here you go North End Bakehouse, your first real 1 star review.

For an award winning vanilla slice I was very disappointed. I tried to ignore the size thinking the taste would make up for it but I found the product gross. It was too sweet and stuck to my teeth. I noticed the custard was very smooth but that wasn’t enough to save it. Glenrowan and Beechworth do it better. They are larger and don’t kill you with sugar. I can tell you now I did not feel good after eating it. The same feeling you get when you drink too much chocolate milk because of the sugar content.

I thought ‘maybe I just got a bad batch’ and considered coming back but not after the other food I ate. The red velvet cookie. Absolutely disgusting. This business takes the flavour of red velvet too literally. I swear it was doused with flavouring syrup, not how red velvet is made. My dad and I looked at each other and said “what on earth did we just eat?” Didn’t make it past one bite and the flavour lingered.

The melting moments. I could taste the corn flour. Its like the vanilla slice stole all its sugar. The biscuit to filling ratio is way off. Not to mention it is huge. They are crumbly messes so they should not be that large.

I continue to be disappointed by sausage rolls that use as little meat as possible and replace it with substitutes (eg- bread crumbs).

I can continue on with the other items I bought and disliked but i’ll leave it there.

This is my honest review, I don’t want a resolution either. I chose to spend my money here and I won’t be back to spend it again. I’m going to stick to the towns along the highway and not 1hr 15mins out of my way to Melbourne for product I...

Took a detour on a recent family trip to try their award winning vanilla slice. Well worth the detour and it's always a fun mission with the kids, discovering new places on the quest for the "perfect" vanilla slice!

After having a chuckle at some of the reviews we thought we would give them a try. It's funny how we all turn into food critics, scrutinising every aspect of a vanilla slice!

North End Bakehouse is small bakery in an industrial estate whos livelihood, no doubt, is dependant on locals popping in for a quick takeaway smoko and lunch. Constant flow of customers whilst we were there. Staff friendly and patient. No seating inside and things wrapped in glad wrap as it's obviously a take away bakery. For us visiting "food critics" that are only there for the one off vanilla slice purchase, they conveniently sell a 4pack ready to go in a cardboard box.

The vanilla slice was obviously freshly made, the pastry was almost perfectly crisp and flakey! Custard had a good flavour and consistency and the icing sweet shiny and smooth. All together, it was quite tasty, possibly a little on the sweeter side for my taste, but we all enjoyed it very much! We somehow ended up with a left over slice, the custard's flavour and texture developed overnight, it was even more rich and creamy at the expense of the pastry's crispness.

Was it the nicest I've ever tasted? Probably not. Did I enjoy it? Yes! Did we have fun visiting Sheparton and discovering a new...
