Port Albert Fish n Chip Review Update 9/3/2025
It is a bustling long weekend, but the stifling heat of the coastal breezes offers no mercy. The seaside town, devoid of competing eateries, draws an insatiable crowd of locals and holidaymakers to the possibly only dining refuge. Every table in the dining area and at the veranda is occupied. Trading off air-conditioned comfort with the swelling heat, dinners opt to enjoy the best waterfront view.
The moment of indulgence arrives as we order their signature Gummy Shark and Flathead, accompanied by a large serve of golden chips. The fish, though thinner and smaller than what I am accustomed to in my suburb, is freshly fried to perfection, its flavour capturing the essence of the ocean. The chips are an artistic balance — not too chunky, not too delicate — each one a symphony of crunch and golden-brown glory. Visited 5/1/2023 [t is a sunny afternoon, the wind is not that strong. My friends and I choose to sit outside to enjoy the breeze and a dose of Vitamin D.
The outside bright sunlight is glary, thus making the shop dark inside, as shown in the photos.
If you are hungry, this place is going to set you back substatially. We order Gummy Shark, Tiger Flathead Ling and chips to try out. We have no idea of the portion sizes. They are just small, as big as a tentacle of a squid. Flavourwise is not that spectacular, because the oil has a distinct taste.
There are not that many customers in the shop, and therefore we do not have...
Read moreI was warned by a local that their chips aren't very nice, but after driving for an hour to visit the township & have their fish n chips, I was going ahead. Big mistake! Worse chips we have ever had. They were definately pre cut chips baught bulk, & cheap. They lacked fluffiness, flavour (even with chicken salt) and freshness. I'm not kidding.....worse quality chips. The flake on the other hand was lovely. Fresh & melt in your mouth, however a little on the small side. Speaking of which, I had never had, nor seen scallops as small as theirs. It was tiny already but even so after removing the batter, it was the size of a 5 cent coin😮. This did not match the big price. The calamari was either poor quality or over cooked. I really don't know what other reviewers are raving about. I can't even conclude that this may have been a one off bad day, but there was inexcusable evidence..........I was warned by the locals and the sizes were not imaginary. This was very dissapointing. Don't be fooled by the marketing and tourist information Centre brochures or the environmental setting. In addition, the staff should be a little more friendly and welcoming. Sorry I don't have much...
Read moreBeautiful whiting sold here. Battered scallops and prawns great too. Chips were ok but the calamari tasted like cheap frozen supermarket stuff. Theres a bit of confusion surrounding the “4 people only” in the shop rule. People were left floundering outside not knowing who could enter or who’s turn next etc. Might be best to set up a line for people to wait in outside as there were several people waiting their turn outside and a guy just walked through past everyone and jumped the queue to order, I could see why though as he must have assumed we were all waiting on our orders when in fact we were waiting to see who’s turn it was next to order. Beautiful location and plenty of chairs and tables around to picnic at. One thing…what fish and chip shop doesn’t put a wedge of lemon in the seafood packs???? This one!...
