I got the butchers cut of the day, and general rule of thumb for pub steaks you always order the level below what you want (e.g. if you want medium rare, you order rare. Or if you want medium you order medium rare) as with a pub being a casual dining place they often optimise speed of food coming out over "exact" orders.
Hence why I ordered a rare steak to get my medium rare. Unfortunately that rule of thumb didn't quite work here as I ended up getting a medium well/almost well done. Making it quite a hard steak for a person of small stature to chew through.
The garlic butter cauliflower and broccoli felt more like boiled/steamed veg with no butter and barely any garlic along with the lack of noticeable seasoning (which may perhaps be due to its regular patronage of older people, which doesn't explain the very tough steak). That though while it was steamed well, I think the wording on the menu needs to be changed to simply steamed veggies if that's how they cook it. To avoid customer disappointment
I didn't think I would need to comment on this but the mushroom sauce for the steak was very watery and diluted and lacked depth of flavour. I am again unsure if this was how it is usually as I was just visiting the area. The only thing I had on my plate that was solid was the chips. But that's easy to deep fry well with a timer. My partner had the chicken schnitzel and it was good, so perhaps in future I would stick to the deep fried dishes instead.
The servers were very lovely though, and atmosphere lively with the nice aesthetic of an old train station with the old train in the middle for kids to play in. Apart from the yelling from the kitchen that can be heard every now and then, to which they could use a door to dampen the sound from the kitchen as it did take me by surprise a few times. General pub loudness and jolly vibes is a given with Aussie pubs, but not with the kitchen noises and banging...
Read moreWe were there for the Derby siren-to-siren dinner and drinks on Saturday night, which was about $55 per person. We had pretty high hopes but when we arrived (about 15 mins before bounce down), the man greeting guests and ticking-off names already seemed flustered. Very quickly the small space filled up and we were packed in like sardines. Drinks were very slow to be ordered and delivered to tables as this one guy seemed to be the only staffer manning the event, running orders back and forth to the bar and back. It wasn't until the end of first quarter time that everyone had eventually been seen to. It was so busy that instead of ordering by the glass, wine drinkers were simply given the whole bottle, which we weren't mad about, but you could see this staffer was just trying to keep it together. He was still working alone at this point, other than one other guy who was getting punter's names and winning margins for a competition, which is fine, but the priorities were off - people needed to be served.
Then the food. Oh geez, the food.
At an event like this, all packed in, the food - typical bar snack stuff (again totally fine) - but the bowls of chips, wings, corn ribs etc, should've been delivered to guests, table by table. Instead they were popped on a small table up front to people to help themselves.
This turned a bit hectic - the people at the tables closest to the food were well fed, but the rest of us, it was like the quick and the dead to get anything. Basically, as soon as food came out, it was gone. It was also hard to manoeuvre around all the tables to get to the food, or simply just in or out of the area, because we were all so tightly packed in.
The atmosphere was great, but the set-up and the lack of staff really let the Gossy down this time.

We had a table booked for my birthday dinner on a Monday. 9 adults 2 highchairs one pram.
When we arrived, the waiter maybe new owner/manager (idian fella) looked confussed. He walks around the restaurant and then informs us that our table is up the top where the stairs are even though we had prams. I said we have prams as noted when booking he just looked at me, confussed, and said yes maam we have your table up there. No highchairs set up, no cutlery, or glasses.
My husband went to get drinks from the bar when he came back he mentioned how lacking the staffs service was behind the bar. The staff used to be great and lovely to get along with.
The whole table, even though paying separately, ordered one after the other. Food was all ordered by 6.45pm. Just after 7pm, 3 meals came out (fish and chips).
By 7.30pm no other meals had come out I mentioned it to the staff with the response you ordered at separate times. 8pm came, and we saw what we thought was our order as we ordered the meat platter, and the daughter had a burger. Nope, it went to the table behind us that was seated after we had ordered.
I went up to the kitchen, and our dockets were at the end still not even started. We were met with blank faces as to why our meals were not out. They said they could make it now, but we had kids, and others had finished their meals. We were given our money back but didn't make up for completely ruining our night. We did not know that it had new owners, and it's a bit sad as it is our go-to place if older family members are coming for dinner as we have been going there for...
