I’m genuinely mystified why this café appears to have such a high review rating, as our experience was terrible. I can only assume that they have recently had a change in management, as this is possibly the most bizarre and frustrating place that I have ever tried (unsuccessfully) to order a meal. I arrived with my elderly parents at about 2:20pm on Friday 6 January after a lovely visit to Caversham Wildlife Park, hoping for some late lunch. The place was almost empty. Finding somewhere clean to sit was not easy as the entire establishment was filthy. There was litter and discarded food all over the ground, not a single table was clean, and several chairs had large bird droppings on that had not been wiped off. The bathrooms were also unclean with overflowing bins and litter in the sink. Staff were rude, confused and appeared to speak very little English. There were no food menus to be found and only one staff member in sight, so I asked if the kitchen was still open. I was told in halting uncertain English that only burgers and fish and chips were available, in addition to some pre-made sandwiches from the deli counter. We ordered some fish and chips and a toasted ham and cheese sandwich. The newly installed tap beer was flat and tasted like soap. Also beware that if you ask for a pint you will be given a schooner. I’m not sure if this is a licensing restriction or just a language barrier issue, but the staff made no mention of the size difference when we ordered a pint. When I asked for some tap water out of the fridge, I was unceremoniously handed a jug but no glasses. Perhaps we were supposed to drink the water out of the jug? While we were waiting for our food with our oddly mismatched cutlery (good luck trying to find two forks the same shape or size) a gentleman who appeared to be the manager approached our table (which had still not been cleaned) and repeatedly asked me to leave a review for the beer on Facebook or Google, which I found oddly confronting. After waiting nearly 40 minutes without any sign of our food (we were almost the only customers), we requested a refund. At this point, my mum (who had paid via credit card) was incorrectly told by a confused staff member that her payment had not gone through, which is why our food had not been prepared. I was fairly shocked by this logic, to say the least. My mum insisted that our meals had been paid for (we later confirmed this with our bank) and once again asked for a refund, but we were left waiting while staff scratched their heads, looked confused and told us they could not issue a refund because they had no record of our payment. At this point the gentleman that I assumed was the manager reappeared and told us that everything was fine because our food was ready, then pointed at the table where we had just been sitting, which now contained three cheap-looking styrofoam takeaway containers, a far cry from the beautifully presented food (on proper plates) as shown in the photos of other reviewers. Did we even go to the same café as these other reviewers? By this point we no longer had any appetite and just wanted to leave and put the entire nightmarish experience behind us. My mum once again requested a refund and was once again refused, so we left in disgust. Unless you are the sort of person that enjoys complete incompetence, I strongly recommend avoiding this establishment...
Read moreI recently had the pleasure of dining at Village Cafe, and it exceeded all my expectations. From the moment I walked in, I was struck by the warm, inviting atmosphere that made me feel right at home. The new menu is nothing short of fantastic, offering a diverse selection of dishes that cater to all tastes.
The woodfire pizzas are a standout, with their perfectly crispy crust and generous toppings that burst with flavor. The waffles and pancakes are equally impressive, served fresh and fluffy, making for a delightful breakfast or brunch experience. It’s clear that a lot of thought and care went into crafting this menu.
One of the highlights of Village Cafe is its family-friendly approach. The kids-eat-free offer on weekends is a wonderful benefit for families looking to enjoy a meal out without breaking the bank. It’s also a great spot for dog owners, as the cafe is welcoming to furry friends, adding to the relaxed and inclusive vibe.
I was also pleasantly surprised by the addition of Yahava KoffeeWorks coffee. The quality and flavor of the coffee were exceptional, making it the perfect complement to my meal.
The service was top-notch—attentive without being intrusive, and always with a friendly smile. It’s clear that the staff takes pride in their work and genuinely cares about providing a great dining experience.
Overall, Village Cafe has quickly become one of my favorite places to dine. With its delicious food, welcoming atmosphere, and thoughtful amenities, it offers a truly enjoyable experience for everyone. I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a great meal in a relaxed,...
Read moreDecided to go to this cafe instead of a brewery in the valley for lunch. Full of regrets! First impressions great a nice little cafe. Standard looking menu. Order the chicken burger and fish and chips (default choice as they were out of beef patties for the aussie burger.) Eventually the meals came out at the same time as the microwaved scones. Noticed the burger didnt have chips. Fine, didnt read the menu properly my mistake. Fish and chips come out with 3 long bits of fish. While not terrible it sure wasn't great. Chicken burger was dry and burnt. After getting over that disappointment while still waiting for our milkshakes tried to eat the soft scone which tasted mouldy. Finally after enquiring about the drinks (told sorry they have been busy) only 20 people there and didnt all arrive at once (gentleman was also enquiring where his coffee was) get the 2 milkshakes and OMG I should have just got the refund when i thought of telling them not to bother. 'vanilla' simply tasted like weak milk and the banana seemed to taste a bit like chai but that could have also just been the mouldy taste left over from the scone. Got a refund for the drinks no questions asked and fled. Not one to leave food even when average I could not leave this place fast enough. Would hate to see them on a busy weekend. Local deli food is cheaper and far better quality!! Highly reccomend taking your...
