What you need to know first of all is that while the address if Antonigasse 9, if you arrived as we did via the 42 streetcar, you will find yourself standing in front of a firmly locked door and a collapsing sign above it indicating that the former Ganesha restaurant no longer exists. You will almost sigh in exasperation and turn back to the 42 streetcar to go elsewhere. Don't do that! Just walk a few steps further and on the corner, hey presto, there you will find Tandoori Junction, the successor to Ganesha with the same garden but a different entrance, I personally liked the decor, I know some people prefer a more austere non-Indian vibe but in my opinion, if I'm in Austria and have a craving for Indian food, there might as well be Indian decor as well. It's not overdone, quite atmospheric. The lady of the house is very pleasant and welcoming. We started out in the garden as it was a warm evening, but - without evidence, just my personal panic - we decided to go indoors to avoid mosquitos. The food was really excellent. My addiction is Paneer Makhni and too often, the sauce tastes like it came out of a package. Not here. It was fresh, with nuanced flavors, and exactly the "very spicy" heat we requested. Fantastic with the delicious soft and crispy butter naan. The service is indeed, as others have noted, very slow. My recommendation to this wonderful restaurant would be to perhaps offer a free order of pappadoms with dip to tide people over. They could add one or two euros to the price of the main course to make up for that, and the prices would...
Read moreWe came here on a Friday night, having reserved a table for 2 a few hours earlier. We were a little surprised to see so few customers in this well decorated restaurant. We were invited to choose any table we wanted. No problem. But we noted that dirty plates and glasses from previous guests remained for quite some time at a number of other tables.
After an usually long 10 minute wait, we finally got served. I went for the local beer (Gösser) and the chili chicken (not as spicy as I had been expecting) as the main course after a starter of fried onions (Piaz Pakora). My wife went for a large glass of mango lassi and the mixed Thali with garlic naan bread.
Service was friendly but rather slow which was odd given that there were so few customers here.
The prices here were reasonable. We left, paying a bill of 55€ including a modest tip.
Anyway, we enjoyed our meal which was...
Read more*While the food was acceptable, our overall experience was deeply disappointing. We waited over 2 hours and 15 minutes for our meals to be served, which is simply unacceptable. The restaurant lacked proper ventilation—there were no windows, and only ceiling fans circulated warm air from the kitchen, making the environment extremely uncomfortable.
Lighting was inadequate, with only the last two tables receiving any illumination. Unfortunately, we had to eat our lunch in near darkness. Although our drinks arrived within 15 minutes, the prolonged wait for food caused them to become warm due to the high temperature and poor air circulation.
The most concerning issue was the unprofessional service. One of the naan breads we received appeared to have a bite taken out of it. When we brought this to the staff’s attention, the response was dismissive and defensive, implying that we were being dishonest rather than addressing the concern respectfully.
In summary, while the food was passable, the service, ambiance, and overall experience warrant no more than one star.
