The Roti Den

Ive been eating and cooking roti for over 35 years, in many different countries and styles, but I have never been served RAW roti until the Roti Den!

Service was fast and welcoming, but when I asked for a roti, owner said, “ok but we’ll have to make it fresh for you”. Ummm, yes thats why Im here! Oh dear.

The roti was cooked so badly, there was no separation in between and zero flakiness. More like a doughy thin tasteless pancake with raw edges that compress back to dough.

I love a lamb curry with bones too, but this was 1/3 bone, 2/3 meat and just not enough flavour. Not a joy to eat.

We were searching for a good roti spot and this place was recommended to us, however, it was lackluster at best. The menu had a wide variety of roti options but the prices were higher than the island norm. We ordered an all goat roti, and upon receival, it was very sloppy. It wasn't put together properly at all and dripped everywhere! Yes, we understand it's bone in roti and we've had bone in before, however this was 85% bone, 15% meat. It would be understandable if there was more flavour. Usually with a curry roti, there's a bit of spice, but this was bland for our liking. The beef roti was amazing. My friend and I decided to go there for a late lunch. It was my first time and I was surprised at the cozy seating available. The curry was tasty, the roti well made and good size. We ate, drank beers and talked for a few hours afterwards, not wanting to leave. The atmosphere felt like sitting in your friend's kitchen. I will go back, and we were happy to find a curry house open on Sunday. Not typical Trini or Indian curry but good Guyanese flavors......I'm going back to try the shrimp roti.
