Read moreLots and lots of hype regarding QP Bistro. Lots! So of course we had to see what all of the hype was about. We decided to visit for lunch prior to hitting the beach at One Sandy Lane.
Our server - Antonio, the man. Best server we have had by far on any of our trips to Barbados. We could talk to Antonio for hours if time permitted. Polite, attentive, funny and very knowledgeable about food and Barbados in general.
Starter - Our lunch started off great with a nice presentation of fresh bread roll options. The jalapeno option was our favorite. I opted for the Amazing Spanish Gazpacho soup which is served cold. Yes, I was a little skeptical at first regarding cold soup but Antonio reassured me that I would not be disappointed - and I was NOT. Great flavors, texture and presentation. The Caribbean Spiced Chicken Wings were well executed. Tender with a nice BBQ sauce accompanied by a side of coleslaw. Most restaurants don't worry about presentation when it comes to wings but most restaurants aren't like QP Bistro.
Main Course - The Beef Burger was cooked perfectly and the presentation of the fries in a mini fry basket was a very nice touch. Pairing the cheesy Ground Provision au Gratin with the Blackened Catch Of the Day was a good choice. I cannot recall exactly what the "Catch of the Day" fish was but typically in Barbados it is either Mahi-Mahi or Marlin..just to name a few.
Dessert - Our choices for dessert were the Mr. Whippy's Soft Serve Ice Cream served in a waffle cone, the Tiramisu which is was a nice blend of coffee and dark chocolate. Both were a great ending to our lunch. Not too sweet. We also tried the Passion Fruit Cheesecake. I wouldn't call it the best cheesecake we've ever had but it was still good.
Drinks - Strawberry daiquiri, was amazing as expected. But really, those drinks are hard to mess up anyways. As a person who loves stouts, bocks and dark beer, it was nice to see Guinness as an option on the menu. I had a few. If you would prefer liquor or a mixed drink, you are in excellent hands. They have an extensive list of options. For the Whiskey/Bourbon options alone, I counted about 23 different options.
At the end of our experience, because it wasn't just lunch, it was an experience - our server allowed us to feed the fish in their beautiful fish pond. This place has it all! From the food, to the hostess, server and bathrooms, everything was superior to the other "upscale" restaurants that we visited. The beauty of the restaurant even attracts nearby yachts and boats.
PROS Great food presentation Great food flavors Best server during our visit in Barbados Beautiful beach side views Cleanest and fanciest bathrooms on the island
CONS The entrance to QP Bistro parking lot creeps up on if you if you're not driving slow.
THINGS TO NOTE You are required to choose either the: Two Course [Starter + Main Course OR Main Course + Dessert] Three Course [Starter + Main Course + Dessert] Hence you cannot just decide to have the main course with no...
Read moreWhilst appreciating that it is early days for this new opening, they have a number of issues that need urgent attention. The first and foremost is customer service. We booked our table originally for 16:30 and bought this forward to 15:30 and it was confirmed that we could have the table until 18:30 – 19:00 dependent on who we spoke to. At 15:45 we were in formed that our table was need in 15 minutes time for a VIP! As we have our own hotel my wife enquired that surly all customers should be viewed as VIP’s but apparently not all VIP’s are created equal and a rather diminutive gentlemen with the “X-Factor” was more VIP “than wot we woz”!
A charming female manager later explained that our table had been specifically requested by SC and apologised for the rude and clumsy initial approach and acknowledged that we had indeed booked the table until 19:00. As we did not want desserts, we decided to assist their predicament and moved to the newly appointed lounge/bar area with the water feature and casual seating. I am sure that SC was not aware of the approach the staff took with us and would be equally concerned by the ineptitude of their approach. Whilst appreciating that they are trying to achieve an Italian style of service and cuisine the Maître d and one of the waiting staff who were Italian had a very odd way about them. When trying to order the champagne he was constantly pushing us toward the top marques when it was obvious that we were happy with the House Champagne Piper Heidsieck.
The Italian lady that stood the entire time about 2 meters behind the table throughout the meal, always seemed surprised whenever we requested anything and then was seemingly unable to understand what was being requested. Moving to the food and I am sorry Antonio (Chef Patron) but the food was not great two of our party of 9 had the octopus to start and it was very rubbery and chewy, we had octopus at the Fish Pot the next day and it was entire different i.e. tender and succulent. I had the Palma Ham and mellow, the dish was crudely presented – the Mellon was not ripe and cut into 4 triangular slices with a large clump of ham dumped in the middle, the ham itself was nice but the dish looked like it had been created by a 5-year-old. On the whole the main courses were good and enjoyed by all. Cocktails were provided FOC (not requested) and they were lovely, they also provided 2 large portions of Tiramisu for our group and these looked and tasted amazing. A highlight was the Chef Patron Mr Antonio Mellino joined us in the bar area, he was lovely and very engaging, which is why writing some of the comments above has not been easy. As a hotel owner myself I fully appreciate the stresses and strains of a new opening with all new staff, policies and procedures yet to bed in, I have no doubt that over time service will improve along with the quality of the food. Currently there are many more better places to visit so I would wait for a few months. But hey ho, like any review it is just one...
