Before I start let me mention that the waiter repeatedly mentioned that Nous was mentioned in a Michelin Guide.
My partner was hungry and I wasn't particularly, so I thought I'd order a side or two. Well, because they are restaurant mentioned in a Michelin Guide, everyone sitting must order a main. So, I ordered a main recommended by the waiter instead of the side, and my partner ordered the Mussels with ras el hanout and Salmon on mashed potatoes w/spinach.
The mussels were fishy, at least 1-2 days beyond best before date, and there was absolutely no ras el hanout flavor or salt or naturally saltiness from the ocean in the dish. It appeared they put some turmeric in the water to cook the vegetables sprinkled on top, but there was no aromatic ras el hanout flavor, nor even a hint of curry.
I noticed the people next to us eating the same fixed menu (a course ahead) and the salmon was clearly overcooked, so I asked the waiter to cook my partner's to medium (to avoid a hard, fibery salmon). He gave me the stink eye.
When the mains came, he brought my side that I had said I would replace with the recommend $25 "burger," which turned out to be a patty with side salad of arugula and cherry tomatoes. No bun, no toppings, no frites, nothing. Of course, the misunderstanding of my not needing 2 dishes when I said earlier to the waiter that I wasn't hungry, was my fault, because, remember they are mentioned in a Michelin Guide.
The salmon was properly cooked, my partner enjoyed the dish overall, and the side dish was the best thing the both of us ate there.
During the same time, a couple split ONE order of mussels. No need for EU residents to have to order two mains, I guess.
The waiter was rude the entire time. I kept a deferential face on and even went with the main he recommended without question. What he didn't seem to care to explore was why I knew food so well, including asking whether I have been to any "Michelin Guide mentioned" restaurants, to which I would've responded I cook quite a bit, farm to table and from the French Laundry cookbook, and I regularly eat at Epicure, Arpege, Toutain, Le Neuvieme Art, etc. Be curious, not judgmental.
The final straw - the waiter overcharged us by 10 euro. So, I showed him the bill and instead of saying "sorry - let me double check," he pulled the bill out of my hand, gave me a stink eye, and spent 15 seconds doing math that a 5th grader could do in 5. The waiter slapped 10 euro in my hand and said something rude in Flemish. It was definitely not "I'm sorry." At least, he didn't mention again that they were Michelin Guide mentioned.
A notes for Nous - I have no idea how you got a "mention" in a Michelin Guide. Your food is not up to snuff - old mussels, underseasoned food, overcooked proteins... Putting aside the 2-3 star Michelin restaurants above, I have been to a large number of restaurants not "mentioned" in the Michelin Guide, but which deserve 1+ star - excellent food and service (wine lists and overall ambience would hold them back from being 2 stars). So, just because you have a mention or even a star from Michelin doesn't mean people should cower before your snobby waiter or...
Read moreI am not sure whether this a problem with the owner of the restaurant or the staff who served us. We are a family of 4 with 2 kids, aged 12 and 8. We asked if we can order 2 tasting menu and 2 main in the beginning. The staff then recommended us to order 3 tasting menu (€55each) because we have 2 kids. This is the reason why we ordered 3 dishes with 4 people. When we placed the order, we clearly told the staff I am allergic to beef so he said he will ask the chef to see anything they can do. He then come back saying the chef will change the beef to pork. We are really happy for this arrangement so we placed the order. One of the appetisers changed to pork and the journey was good until the main course arrived because the main appears to be beef. He didn’t even introduce when he served the dish. When we ask him what kind of meat it was, he just said ‘not beef’. He is unwillingly to tell this is veal when we insist him to tell us what kind of meat it was again. He then said baby cow. I was about to ask if he can change it to anything else and to my big disappointment/ surprise, he then said ‘I told you the main is veal when you order.’ How can he be so rude to say this? If you can’t change the main dish, why don’t you tell us at the beginning and why you change the appetiser to pork for us? This is the reason why we are quiet as I don’t think there any room for us to discuss and I don’t want to argue about this. We did finish the food so we paid the full price without saying anything. I am the one who didn’t have it because I’m allergic to beef. My son is not happy with the experience so he leave this comment on google and I just noticed this when i back home. I’ve been going to more that 10+ Michelin restaurants before and this is absolutely the worst experience I ever have, not the food but clearly negative service level. I can’t believe the owner will leave such a reply with all lies and racism....
Read moreUnbelievably rude staff. We tried to go on our way back to the station, we didn’t have very long and to be honest the menu didn’t look very appetising (if I wanted to have a Thai curry Brugge wouldn’t exactly be my first choice). The only thing we fancied was the moules. The waiter said we couldn’t just order that because it was a starter size. He very rudely offered to give us bigger portions, basically insinuating that it was because we couldn’t pay for a meal (we can, and we did at a restaurant around the corner, where we had a lovely meal). We asked to pay for our waiter and leave. He was so offensive i would never recommend anyone to go to this restaurant. I would give it minus...
