SOMM — Restaurant in Ghent

We have been here a couple of times now, and for me, this place has it all: a great list of wines by the glass, hand-picked by the owner and changing weekly, so there's always something new to discover, a very appealing menu: none of the traditional (boring) dishes here, but something special in perfectly sized portions (two plates will get you a full belly, and you can combine them each with a different wine!), and an owner, Marina, who is so passionate and knowledgeable about wine, she'll help you with all your questions and desires, whether you are a wine aficionado or a curious wine drinker: let her guide you, and you will not be disappointed.

We had a very nice dinner and evening in this cozy restaurant. The two owners are great hosts. We all enjoyed the different dishes, from starter to desert. The well selected wines paired very nicely with them. There is also the possibility to only order a glass of wine. They also organize wine events...

Zoals uit eerdere reviews blijkt, staat de wijnkeuze centraal en bepalen de wijnen de bijpassende gerechten in plaats van andersom. De gastheer maakt graag tijd om meer toelichting te geven bij de wijnen en past het tempo van de gangen aan aan de wensen van de klant. De focus op wijn zou de foutieve indruk kunnen wekken dat het eten ondergeschikt is aan de drank, wat absoluut niet het geval is. Elk gerecht is mooi gepresenteerd, met kraakverse ingrediënten en uiterst smaakvol bereid. Het niveau komt duidelijk boven het betere brasserie-werk uit. De prijs van de wijnformule is vrij fors maar dat wordt wel goed gebalanceerd door een in verhouding goedkope menuformule. Weet ook dat een "bob" wijnformule (halve glaasjes) op vraag wordt aangeboden. Het pand kan wat meer gezelligheid gebruiken maar er zit een verhuis aan te komen, dus dat zal in het nieuwe pand ongetwijfeld...
