My experience at Churrascaria Porto Belo in Bairro Santana, Porto Alegre was disappointing. As an American and a lover of barbecue, I was looking forward to tasting Brazilian flavors at different places during my stay here. We had already enjoyed several churrascarias, such as Brasa, and had great experiences. However, my visit to Porto Belo was different from the others, and not in a positive way.
I'll start with the positive side: the service provided by the staff was excellent, deserving five stars. They were friendly and very polite, doing an amazing job. Unfortunately, the same cannot be said about the restaurant owner.
As foreigners from the United States, we don't have PIX or local debit cards. This had never been an issue at any of the other restaurants we visited, as they all accepted international credit and debit cards. However, when my husband handed over his debit card (since they didn't accept credit cards), the server refused, claiming they didn't accept that type of card. We tried to explain that it wouldn't be a problem as the payment would be authorized instantly, but the server insisted we speak to the owner, who was extremely rude.
My husband approached the owner's table to explain our situation and the origin of our card. However, instead of understanding, he received a condescending and unpleasant attitude. The owner not only refused the card payment but also treated us with disrespect, completely disregarding our explanations.
Fortunately, we had cash with us, so my husband offered to pay with it. However, the owner tried to deceive us by offering a much lower exchange rate than the actual one. My husband refused to accept it and insisted on paying the correct amount.
Throughout this ordeal, my husband overheard the owner talking to someone else, asking why he didn't pay in cash from the beginning. My husband said: If you want avoid fees or pay the government, thats your problem.
In the end, my husband paid for our meal in cash, tipped the waiter (who, I must add, was extremely professional throughout the situation), and we left the restaurant.
My opinion of this situation is as follows: the owner of Porto Belo is extremely unpleasant and needs to rethink how he treats customers. We will never return to this place, and he will never see my dollars or my...
