My partner and I stopped by for a quick bite and tried the classic London fish and chips ($18.75 + tax, though oddly listed at $24.75 on their website). The overall experience was okay.
The woman at the counter was friendly, and the atmosphere seemed good-energy. The food came out quickly. The fish was nicely cooked with a good fish-to-breading ratio. The breading was on the thinner side and cooked a bit too crunchy for my taste. The fries were classic Quebec greasy spoon style—dark, mushy, greasy. Not bad for that genre, but ours were clearly not freshly fried and arrived cold. The coleslaw was cool and fresh; my husband enjoyed it, but I found it watery and heavy on the onion. Tartar sauce was average, which is fine.
The biggest downside for me was the “tip-flation.” For counter service and cold fries, the suggested tip options started at 15% with no way to enter a custom amount. That felt like a cash grab on an already expensive fast food meal and left a bad taste. A little suggestion to the owners: research shows that setting high minimum tip prompts can actually reduce tipping overall.
Bottom line: I might go again if I’m very hungry and in the area—the location is convenient and the food is acceptable. I will be prepared for tip request and tip cash like...
Read moreLe Shack du Pêcheur Express shares the restaurant space with la Belle Province, a hamburger and fries operation. The dining area is common, and they each occupy half of the kitchen counter where food is ordered. I should have taken greater note that by far more customers were ordering from the hamburger side.
I ordered a vegetarian Poké bowl and found it ho-hum. I have only had one other Poké bowl and found it lacking as well, so maybe I just do not like that particular dish.
My wife ordered the Greek salad. Now, typically, you have to hunt down the four or five black olives in the salad. This one had what looked like at least half a can of black olives dumped on the top. The feta was in tiny diced cubes and had little taste. The rest was some bits of pepper and maybe some lettuce. The olives were way over the top and my wife could not finish it.
However, my son said his order of fish and chips was good and the piece of fish was big.
Bottomline, if you go there, take the fish and chips or join the crowd at la...
Read moreFirst fish and chip experience I have found in the eastern townships of Quebec and I was impressed. Not as traditional Ias I am used to but Quebec flair is welcome addition to any cuisine and fish and chips especially. Big nicely textured filet of cod tasty batter, fresh parsley and lemon garnish and this foodie will choose Quebec frites over English chips everytime. Tarter sauce even had a piquante flair. Don't change a thing...
