I don’t like leaving bad reviews but I feel this one is important for the business and management and anyone who is interested in dining there.
Customer service needs to be worked on. I am super disappointed; especially as someone who has many years in hospitality and customer service.
First of all, I understand it’s a busy spot and they have quick turn overs here and permit 90min dining during busy hours. However, when your staff is rushing people when dining and not letting them really enjoy their meal then it ruins the whole experience… I will explain that later but let me take you through our experience from when we entered.
Our male server we had on the patio seemed nice and professional. He came to us in a timely manner after we were seated, was good with his timing for taking our order and then the rest of the time we dined we didn’t see him again until we asked for our bill. We had another server ask us how our meals were so I thought I would mention that too. I was surprised our own server was not the one to ask but this could maybe be because the patio didn’t have designated serving sections and had few servers on deck to help the customers.
My husbands plate was cleared before mine (I was taught to never do that when I used to serve and to clear plates when the woman was also finished)
Also, I was enjoying my dish and taking my time and twice within 3 min I was asked if I was done eating while I still had food in my mouth. At this point we had only been dining for about 40 minutes at this point and I politely said no the first time and the second time I was upset I didn’t even finish the last few bites and just pushed my plate towards the server for them to take it because again, I still had food in my mouth and was chewing it and couldn’t answer and was just savoring my food because that’s what I like to do. The servers doing that really ruined my experience and my appetite and I think it’s terrible to rush anyone when they are eating. I almost wanted to talk to management about it right away but I don’t have it in me to deal with this in person as I was already feeling uncomfortable.
When a business is more concerned about their turnover rather then their guests dining experience that’s a good way to have no returning customers. I do not care how good the food is. I will not return to a place that doesn’t care about customer satisfaction and only about the business turning over tables quickly enough so they can make as much revenue as possible.
I dine out to enjoy myself, the atmosphere, the food and the service that I am paying for. I felt like I wasted my money coming here when I was looking for a way better experience than this with money I work hard for and want to spend. The food was good but it’s not the best. If you don’t care about the service then try the food out and I’m sure there’s something there worth your money as there’s lots of options, food looks nice and presentable.
This business needs to take a look at their customer service and do better to train their staff properly to know when to approach their tables and guests, when to pick up their plates and even drop off their bill on time. You may think you’re being professional but from my years of experience being someone who has many years managing, bartending and serving - I will say that it’s not professional because I did not feel good leaving and it wasn’t just one staff member, it seemed like a bunch of staff are like this.
The staff was so quick to clear our plates and yet we had to ask for the bill. I wondered “why are they rushing us to collect our dishes when we haven’t even been here for 1 hour?” I saw there was few people waiting in the line up but I don’t believe this is right for any business to rush their guests just because they are busy.
I truly hope this business changes their approach and works on better training their staff. Also having their customers experience as a priority would be good.
Very disappointed and won’t be coming back. I’ll take my...
Read moreThis was a bit of a conflicting review. First time at any OEB and our friend recommended we go! We were quite excited. The food looked absolutely amazing and the atmosphere was lively, clean and lovely. Our server was quite friendly in the beginning. I asked for her opinion between the crepe and the breakfast poutine, and she recommended the crepe.
Now I will take responsibility at this point because I didn’t specify which crepe. But I will also mention, she also didn’t ask. And she didn’t confirm which crepe was ordered. When the food was brought the crepe brought was a banana fruit crepe. I didn’t realize it until I bit into it. I only took one bite. I normally would have just accepted the mistake but I have a medical condition where I can’t eat too much sugar or I would get nauseous, and the fruit crepe was sweet ++.
I waited for her to check in we were ok with our first bites. When she didn’t, I flagged our server to see if it was possible to get the savory crepe. I did wait quite a bit because by this time my husband and friend was halfway through their meal but I was in a cheerful spirit and did take responsibility to say I didn’t specify which one as I didn’t even know there was a fruit crepe.
Her face was quite upset as she said you ordered the crepe. I said yes I wanted the savory one. She had no idea what I was talking about and had to bring me the menu and I showed her the front of the menu offered the savory crepe. She said you didn’t specify which one.. and I said I didn’t even know there was a sweet one? And you also didn’t ask? She said ok and took my plate away.
The food was delicious and I enjoyed it. When we got the bill my husband without looking paid it on the credit card. It wasn’t until later he noticed they charged the crepe that was taken away.
When he went to talk to her server he saw her chatting happily and giggling and her face changed when he brought up the problem.
The manager was quick to refund the plate without any fuss which is why I still put 5 stars on the atmosphere. But this is not ok. The bill came out to almost $70 plus tips for breakfast. We tipped her the most amount because we thought there wasn’t a problem.
My husband and I have both worked in the industry. If you take away the plate, you don’t charge the plate. My husband was quite upset after because you can say that forgetting to take away the plate from the bill was a mistake, but anyone with experience in the industry know… that was petty move. I know I didn’t specify which crepe which is why I took some responsibility for the mistake but she didn’t ask and just assumed the sweet crepe because she wasn’t even aware of the savoury one. And then if you have any professionalism you would double check the bill to make sure the mistake is fixed. It’s a big deal to take a plate back into the kitchen, it’s not something you just forget. Again, we have both worked in the industry.
For the quality of place this was, unprofessional behaviour is going to ruin experiences, as even though we liked the food it left a bad feeling and memory. I don’t know what she told the manager but this mistake was definitely partially her fault as the server as she didn’t confirm the order and she didn’t check in after the first bites. So to not take responsibility but also add the petty charge to the bill was quite unacceptable. Then to do something like giggling about getting away with it was BEYOND unprofessional. Customers are not stupid, please do not treat people this way.
People that didn’t like service won’t tell you to your face but they just won’t return and spread the word. People that have one horrible experience will have that memory not just for this restaurant and for this brand.
Reading other reviews it appears that service issues is the biggest problem for this restaurant. It appears that the owners do care as they respond to reviews. I do hope this kind of behavior will be corrected as again the restaurant and...
Read moreI am home with a back injury. This is relevant because Brunch is my fave thing in THE WORLD. My husband and I are both avid home chefs and devout restaurant supporters, always looking for that perfect bite. That said, out, even in Vancouver, Brunch is brunch, it’s fun - it’s eggs, it’s syrup ..warring with hollandaise on my plate. I have seriously never been completely wowed. So, we Do Brunch at home A LOT, fresh ingredients, perfected poach, dutch babies in cast iron cribs - mangos 🥭 lovingly studied for days awaiting perfect ripening for the weekend.
I’m truly IN TEARS, in agony, this morning. We have no eggs, no bacon 🥓 SADNESS increasing. My beloved makes a perfect macchiato for me. A Majool date with cream cheese schmear to hold me, while he thinks.
Minutes go by “Oh remember that OEB place up the street?!” Let’s try it…let’s have it delivered my Love.” I look at the menu! “Let’s do it! Let’s take a chance! We need some fun!”I holler through my tears, from our bed.
We decide to SHARE a The Soul In A Bowl and Wake’N bacon as my appetite isn’t massive thru my pain meds and upset but I feel excited already just READING the offerings. Literally like a trained Great Chef said, “Just brunch but with only the best things that people want.” We were cautiously stoked.
So Take-out the first time is a TEST if ever there was one. We had our beautiful plates and cutlery READY. 1. It arrived HOT. Even the bread pudding (Wake’N Bacon) was still stacked and decorated with strawberries, micro green of some sort. Real Maple Syrup in large cup. Huge box of Potatoes! Still warm. The poached eggs on the poutine? The TELL. PERFECT - nested in the potato. Not yet burst but our yolk-needs were there and we knew it! Paprika on the egg? A dusting of something? Where am I, some fine Hotel? The only thing - always be a little more generous with cheese. Agreed not too much, it’s gauche😆 but never make a couple banter over the cheese curd divvy. A great size cup with hollandaise to share and flow over our egg and potato! The Bacon Lardons. NOW YOU KNOW. You will never want other Lardons or Bacons ever. These are them. Every morsel the one you searched for. They’re here. In your life. Be grateful. I ordered a side of OEB Cilantro sauce. I wear cilantro as perfume. I thought, lemme try it and use it on a veggie rice bowl later. Um, tasted it and I will.
I am writing this, whilst digesting THE BEST BRUNCH I HAVE EVER HAD. How do you stack bread with caramel that TASTES like caramel, not thick and sticky but BROWNED and toasty and bright!! CHEF made! Bread pudding is one of my favourite things. I’ve had a few. THIS IS IT! Done. It is SORCERY to have a still sturdy, stacked bread pudding THAT IS PILLOWY soft in the mouth and melts like a magical dessert. ALL: the best bite, breakfast, brunch or dessert ever. To quote 90s It girl and completely annoying L.A. maven, “I DIE”.
Lastly, (thanks for sticking with me, as I said, I have the time, but now? I am officially CHEERED UP 🥹😁) THE POTATOES. You can choose a variety of kinds for the Poutines but I suggest The Soul In A Bowl ordered AS IT COMES the first time. These herbed potatoes?! No one EVER seasons enough for me. I added a skosh of cracked black pepper! But GenZillionMillenialEXES! Listen when I say. I have no more tears for my own pain! Valhalla will have to wait because the healing has begun! These potatoes, their delicate texture and flavour that I shall crave forevermore! They hath informed MINE OWN SOUL (go with me) to be strong for thee, OH SOULFUL BOWL! I will walk into the OEB HALL and dine with you again soon! BEST...
