Really wanted to like this place as it's close to home and I love me some Western style Chinese food every so often. Checked online first and between the combo menu options and decent reviews I finally tried them out. It was around 5 pm and ordered 2 combos @$18 each which is fairly reasonable nowadays. I arrived about 20 mins after ordering and was told they were just waiting on the fried rice to be ready, no problem I replied and took a seat for the wait. Sitting there I noticed the same man open the lid to the rice steamer and proceeded to portion out some very fluorescent yellow/orange rice into a take out container, there were others ahead of me waiting so I figured it was for them. Sitting there I thought to myself "that was some brightly coloured steamed rice" then wondered if they used it for the fried rice. Not only did they use it for the fried rice, it was my "fried" rice. In hindsight I should have asked while I was there why the fried rice came out of a steamer, but after reading the reviews which stated the fried rice was good and even some saying better than food court varieties I shrugged it off and hoped for the best. Got the food home and as soon as I opened the lids I knew it wasn't going to be as many reviews had stated "excellent" "decent" "better than food courts" as the appearance of it looked as if the meats were what was leftover after their lunch service. Meats were pale and swollen from absorbing whatever sauces were once on them, chow mein was dry and then drenched with soy sauce in an attempt to juice them up and that fried rice was actually inedible, the texture was like mush, I'm thinking they put some leftover fried rice from earlier into the steamer in hopes of bringing it "back to life" but all it did was make it disgustingly mushy and had absolutely no taste whatsoever even though the bright colour would make you believe differently. Gave two stars because although the meats weren't fresh they did taste passable so probably were good when fresh and the steamed rice that was ordered with one of the combos was good quality along with the one piece of fresh garlic fried chicken in the steamed rice combo order that was tasty. I will try them one more time during the lunchtime to see if what I thought about the ginger beef and sweet and sour pork was correct. I get that wasting food is bad but if you're going to sell what was fresh at noon still at 5 pm then a 2 for 1 deal or percentage off a single order would definitely build a better customer relationship than selling it for the exact same price as when it was fresh when it...
Read moreI posted a review when they first opened but had to delete it since I feel like the quality changed in just a few short months. Also, they were giving out free soup after leaving a review so I felt I was inclined to leave a better review, although not required.
When they first opened the food was pretty good. Decent dim sum and decent stir fry. I wouldn't say it was ever better than some Chinese restaurants but better than Metrotown food court style chinese food. Value was great with the 25% off grand opening deal.
I've order regularly and I felt like over time it got worse. At first I noticed the fried rice was not evenly fried. What I mean is there would be chunks of white rice and some with egg and sauce. It's not even. Then I noticed some of the stir fry being not as good but nothing worth writing a bad review for. Today I ordered their Kung Pao chicken and I was quite confident it'll be ok since I liked their black bean chicken. Omg it was so overcooked, tough, and over seasoned.ill attach a photo. It'll show the chicken. One piece is regular white chicken breast with some marinate. Maybe not enough marinate. Then next to it is a super overcooked, dry, tough and salty chicken. It looks like beef but it's not. I have beef as well but that particular piece is chicken. I couldn't even eat it. It was rubbery.
It's disappointing because this is a convenient location for me. If their quality dropped so much in just a few short months I don't think the business will last. I think they need to do a better job with quality control. It needs to taste the same no matter who cooked it. They still have a 20% off promo now but if they don't do better they will lose business after the promo ends.
The only redeeming quality now is the portion and price but the...
Read moreLocated in a light industrial complex along with some other fast food outlets, Top Wok Dim Sum Express takes over the location formerly occupied by Yum Bunny.
Given that there isn't much dim sum fare around this area, it's nice to see a new Chinese place pop up.
The interior is bright and airy - pretty much the same as when it was Yum Bunny. They do have large freezers where you can grab some frozen dim sum to go.
The dim sum combo is your best bet here (although they did have stir fry combo available as well). The combo is about $20 and you can pick three dim sum items on top of your choice of starch and drink.
On my first visit, I tried the beef balls, siu mai, and haw gow on soy sauce chow mein. There's a small up charge for the cold HK lemon tea.
My next visit, I had the beef balls, veggie dumplings, and pan fried pot stickers on rice rolls (up charge) and cold HK milk tea (up charge).
First off... the dim sum offerings are limited. But given the area, they do cover the main items. Best things I tried were the beef balls (not big but they were juicy and discernable water chestnuts). The pan fried pot stickers were good too. The siu mai was ok but the haw gow wrapper felt a bit too thick (same as the veggie dumpling).
I preferred the rice rolls (over the soy sauce chow mein) they had a nice velvety peanut sauce to therm.
As keeping with the "express" in their name, the food came out pretty quick. They also have some hot chili sauce at the front counter.
Overall, I was happily impressed. While it might not be the same as eating at an actual Chinese restaurant, it's nice for single diners who are in a rush and might want some variety...
