I have stayed at the Inn twice before (and worked there as a chamber maid 40 years ago) and have always had an exceptionally wonderful experience at the Millcroft. As mentioned by other reviewers, the grounds are lovely and the food is always beyond expectations. The pools are a welcome and relaxing respite from a working holiday. Since I have such high expectations of the Inn based on prior experience, I was so disappointed with my last two night stay. For the first time, I stayed in the Manor House as I wanted a lot of room to spread out to work. My first disappointment was my discovery that the hot tubs were cold and had not been working for a couple of days. I had a soak in the tub in my room which was a pleasant but poor substitute. The pools were not fixed until the evening of the second day of my stay. As I sat down to my work, I was shocked and dismayed to find there were many used tissues underneath my bed. This would be a gross discovery under any circumstance, but during COVID, it was cause for even more dismay. The third and most concerning disappointment was my discovery of black mold on each of the nine panes of glass in the door leading to the patio. I was promptly moved to a second room (which I appreciated, but it was annoying to have to pack everything up in order to move). I will point out that the food was still exceptional and I would like to specifically name one of my servers, Jackie, who was likely the very best server I have ever had, and I have travelled quite extensively. Reception did "apologize for any inconvenience" and they did move me to another room, but that does not negate the fact that I was initially provided a room that had the potential to put my health at risk. IF I were to stay again, I would choose a room in the main inn as they have been recently renovated and have had the carpets removed so it feels like a much cleaner room and the last time I stayed it was spotlessly clean. The Manor House is in its original condition and is in need of major renovations to deal with the mold issue (the second room I was shown in the Manor House also had a lot of mold on the windows). In the end, I was extremely disappointed as the stay was not inexpensive and I felt nothing was done to ensure that I might return for another stay.

Being advertised as a fine dining restaurant, we weren't really sure what to think of Headwaters Restaurant. The prices on their menu certainly seemed upscale enough, but we weren't able to justify paying for an overpriced dinner after reading many of the consistently negative online reviews. We did end up going for breakfast on one morning, and a nightcap with dessert. While the food was okay, it was nothing to write home about, especially when the eggs benedict florentine cost $28 for two poached eggs on some raw baby spinach and a half dozen 'french fry' shaped hash browns. We also had some initial issues with service. The Inn's front desk had told us during check-in that breakfast seating was first come-first serve and the lounge was self-seating. There was no obvious differentiation or signage between the lounge and restaurant areas, so we sat ourselves at a free table after waiting five minutes by the entrance stand, confused due to a sign saying wait to be seated but with no host in sight. This led to us being flagrantly ignored by the waitstaff walking past our table for several more minutes until we asked for one of their attention. Later during our meal, another waitress shouted across the room towards two other diners that they needed to pay before leaving, apparently due to some confusion regarding their B&B package. While our own waitress was lovely and attentive, the general ambiance felt oppressively unwelcoming. The nightcap with dessert was a much better experience, though still a bit stifling, certainly not an atmosphere which encouraged guests to stay for any extended length of time. The desserts themselves were absolutely delicious, and something I would go back for. For guests staying at Millcroft Inn and Spa, Headwaters Restaurant is the most convenient option based only on location. Otherwise, ordering room service will basically add up to be the same with gratuity, or Alton has some very nice cafes and bistros within a ten minute walking distance.

Our experience at the Millcroft Spa was amazing! All thanks to our amazing server at the Headwaters Restaurant - Lisa! This was our best experience ever by any server we have ever had in our entire lives. From when we were first introduced to her, to the moment we left, we had an amazing experience. She is the reason we would come to the Millcroft Inn. She went above and beyond to make our experience memorable. Lisa gave us special treatment throughout and made sure we were accommodated throughout the whole time we were there. She checked in regarding every question we had, and all of our special asks. She was also able to get us the amazing chocolate mousse through her requests to the dessert chef. We had a voucher we were redeeming and from the moment we entered the establishment we made it known we would be using it to use towards our bill. Lisa made sure of this before we placed our orders, checking in with multiple people (including Debra - the supervisor from that night who approved our requests on Nov 25th, 2021). Lisa was also so kind that she surprised us with the "Girls Trip" message on our dessert plates. If you go to the Headwaters restaurant, make sure you ask to be served by Lisa. You will enjoy not only the quality desserts but also the amazing service throughout from Lisa. We would also like to point out the amazing service from the reception at the Millcroft Inn & Spa. Katerina, was able to sort out and communicate with us when we had a misunderstanding with our voucher and what was communicated to us the night prior by the supervisor at the Headwaters Restaurant (through Debra). She was patient, understanding, and very supportive throughout our checkout process. The Millcroft Inn is lucky to have Lisa & Katerina working at their Inn. Thank you for the amazing service, and the relaxing stay both! :)

Honeymoon disappointment for a young couple I have never written a review in my life but I feel this is so important for any couple (especially young couple) to read. We saved up money to do this after our wedding and it was so disappointing I don't even know where to begin. If you are a couple wanting to have this "experience" please please read.

Mid January stay:

Resturant package: EXTREMELY OVERPRICED. We were prepared for paying more to get quality but this was just awful.

Started with mussels- they were very old freezer tase, half of them shut, had a sandlike grit in a lot of them.... I love mussels and get them almost every place we go- never had this type of experience.

Gave a complimentary cheese balls (our waitress was lovely) since we paid for the package already, not much they can do in terms of taking the appetizer (mussels) off the bill. These were horrendous. Cold middle, tasted like freezerburn, warmed up more than once- no flavour.

Main course: Husband- bison, leek and potatos (2 tiny ball roasted potatos) Extremely salty, uneatable amount of salt. Me- pasta, 45 dollars for 5 tortallinies... okay if they were large and exquisite but no...tasteless, ricotta cheese filling was definetly reheated pasta is not "made fresh everyday" like they said...no way I can be convinced of that as an italian who makes her own pasta! The "garnish" tasted like gone bad spinach/greens. I couldn't believe it. Dessert- it was okay, not worth $18 each!!

Brought it all up to the front desk.... theyre lack of concern, accommodation or care was unnerving. They just said okay and billed us. Thought we would try breakfast (eggs and bacon are pretty straight forward) Breakfast- 30 bucks for reheated fries (supposed to be hash), undercooked boxed sausage, eggs were so salty I couldn't even eat, bread was so old and tasted like the kitchen (like its been sitting a long time)

THIS RESTURANT NEEDS TO BE ON A GORDON RAMSAY SHOW. If you're still with me, our room overview:

Croft room: Nice heated bathoom floors, 1 set of towels. Hot tub- clean, worked Shower- rust in the nossles, water only came out of some holes in the shower head bed- had hairs in it (no, not mine) Stains- on the walls and carpet

In conclusion, we checkout out early cancelled our massage and went to the keg. We are so incredibly disappointed and outraged by the lack of care and accommodation provided for the money. I spoke to the front desk stating all our concerns and disappointment and she proceeded to read me the bill. Not how a spa/inn stay should be and certainly not the customer service that should be shown. Save...

Very disappointed in our experience. We were seated at a solo table next to the falls, which was nice and romantic. Our initial impression was positive, our drinks and bread were brought to the table & order placed promptly. The view and ambience was very nice; welcoming, relaxed, and serene.

Then it all fell apart, we were basically forgotten for the rest of the night. It was almost an hour wait for two “AAA” burgers, that we had to find a server to ask about. When the food finally came, we had both finished our drinks, neither the server nor who appeared to be a manager offered a refill or another drink. Our waitress finally came to our table after the food came, she barely got to the table to ask if the food was okay. But not enough time has passed to actually try anything as we were still waiting on condiments. She too didn’t address the drinks, not that she was there long enough to notice.

I had a clear view of the entire patio and could see our waitress tending to the other tables regularly and often. I tried several times to flag her down, I could see her looking directly at me, but she never acknowledged or came back to our table. Instead she tended to a closer table then ducked back inside.

The food was equally disappointing, bland is the best description. The side Caesar was loaded with Parmesan, which was the only source of flavour, the dressing was bleh. The “AAA” burgers were absolutely flavourless, like they somehow managed to remove even the flavour of beef (which to be honest is quite impressive), not to mention they were barely warm. I can (and do) make better burgers at home! The only flavour was a glob of cheddar cheese. I finished mine because I was so hungry, but my finance barely touched hers. Then there was the grilled shrimp, which were the only flavourful item we got, but the flavour was more of a clam chowder.

When we were done with our “experience” we waited awhile longer to see if our waitress would come back & even tried flagging her down again. When she didn’t return we had to seek out the manager again, who apologized but didn’t offer or make any attempt to make the experience better.

Overall, we would have been better off eating off the property at some...
