Lived in Tuscany for almost a year and we finally found time to try the local pub.
Asked our server what's the best thing on the menu and she said she couldn't tell us but she listed some things that were popular. Not a good start. Maybe she has some dietary restrictions but you would hope the staff ate the food there to be able to make recommendations.
I had the jagerschnitzel which came out smothered in gravy that tasted like it was made from a powder. The mashed potatoes were only hot on one side and almost cold not just cool in the middle, and the schnitzel itself was just average.
My wife had the gnocchi salad which she said was good. I did try a byte and there was a lot of vinegar for the vinaigrette for my taste. It could have just been transition from what I was eating to that, that gave it such a jump for me.
The truffle fries were the other thing we had and these were some of the best truffle fries I have ever had. The only thing that was too bad with these was the chaved Parmesan falls off the fries more than a ground Parmesan would. So most of the cheese just ended up at the bottom of the bowl.
The last thing is we were sitting in a booth with our own TV which is a nice touch. But the TV looks to be 15-20 years old because it is very dim. And the image was wide screen standard def on this high def (probably only 720p) TV so for the hockey game we had that thick black bar all the way around the image. Some of the other big screens around the bar were also showing signs that they are VERY old.
With enough beer you wouldn't care. But AV is my industry and when it looks like that it really takes away from my experience.
Still lots to try on the menu. We will be back. But definitely not somewhere to do if you are trying to impress someone. More so just for the...
Read moreBad Experience!! Went out with my husband and adult children for a family night out. First my daughters were harassed for a second piece of ID, as apparently their driver's license wasn't enough! The last straw so-called manager said that anyone under the age of 21 requires a second piece of ID to be able to order alcohol in this establishment! Since when? This is not a government law! Then we order margarita's that the server admitted it took the bartender 3 times to finally make properly! It took forever to get our drink order and then we had to send the margarita's back as it was all ice and tasted like pure salt!! It was obvious they were way under staffed for wing night, as the food took forever as well! When we got our food order the wings were cold! We tried to get another chair added to our table, as our other daughter decided to join us. We asked several times to get another chair, then when I tried to grab a chair from another table so my daughter didn't have keep standing by our table, the so-called manager had a problem with it! She asked me to put the chair back as there were other customers waiting to come in! When my husband asked the manager to get us another chair then she refused and wanted us to move to another table that was dirty with still only 4 chairs for a family of 5!! The "Manager" made it very clear that the task of moving us to a larger table was beyond her small minded capability and had a temper tantrum like a toddler while asking us to leave the premises. After 14 years of loyalty to this bar we have no intention of...
Read moreWent to Last Straw Ale House for the wings and it was pretty terrible. I do not recommend their wings in the slightest. I did not try any of their other food so I can't comment on that.
Not really sure why this place is so busy on wings night though. Between two of us, we ordered 10 servings of wings in different flavours throughout our ~2 hour visit, and they all came out very dry and badly overcooked. Some were underseasoned as well. Honestly its embarassing to be a pub in 2025 and still doing such a bad job with wings. Please, have your cooks go to other restaurants, especially on wing night, to experience how good they COULD be.
Some people use the excuse "well its wing night, ofcourse they aren't the best, they just have to be fast". Sorry, but I would heartily disagree. There are dozens of excellent establishments in Calgary and elsewhere that are fast AND quality. Unfortunately, this place cheaps out on wings because they are very small and lean, barely any meat on them. That likely contributed to the over cooking issue.
The one decent order was the Dill pickle, since they chop up pieces of Dill pickle to help with the flavour. Other than that, all their other flavours were pretty disappointing and lackluster.
The staff were great and fast, atmosphere was average. What you'd expect for a generic pub on wing night. Prices were about mid range for a wing night in the city.
Sadly, this was my first and Last Straw for the Last Straw Ale House. Won't be...
