Pop's was good under the original management and it's second owners, but shifts in the ownership and management have caused some serious issues currently in my opinion. I used to be a regular but after radically bad new management decisions, I've been going in less frequently and spending my money elsewhere. Based on the new management, my rating has changed. No more bands ever, when it used to be frequent. There are nice people in the area that have been regulars there for years but, most realize it's changed and not for the better. I became sick the last two orders of wings I ate, which isn't normal. Service has been abnormally slow on weekend nights with patrons waiting excessively long for service, even at the bar when staff want to talk to each other more than concern themselves with customers. God help you if you ask to speak to management about seeing regulars treated badly or with some of the nonsense you'll experience, as you'll likely be met with radical physical confrontation and staff shoving you out the door while rambling nonsense when you don't lift a finger against them, only to be met with them callng the police on you wrongfully like they did me. Management reprisal against you in the form of a ban from the local watering hole for stating the obvious decline is what to expect as a twenty-year regular if you say something about their horrible management skills. Prices have increased, the clientele has become rougher, and the management intervention seems to.be more concerned with nonsense than providing a decent typically respectful atmosphere. The only thing this place currently has going for it is the Karaoke and some of the regulars that go there out of the convenience of being close to home. They almost demand tips without providing service that would deserve a gratuity. Food is mostly bar food with some Chinese food options as well but the quality of food has decreased when the prices for it have drastically increased. Cleanliness in the washrooms isn't being kept up and often smells emanate from the toilets to the dining area. About the only thing going for it currently is that it's one of the last bars open until 2am 7 days a week for shift workers at that end of town m. Not all the staff is bad although the ones that are, are horrible. I give it two stars for the list of reasons in this review as it was once a good place to go and could be again with proper experienced management who would care about customer service. Good staffing typically isn't hard to find in the current economic conditions. So many other bars in town don't stay open until last call when it typically does is why I gave it two stars and for some of the staff that do care. Don't ever expect the new staff to call out ladt call for patrons on weekends. They'd just rather the bar...
Read moreFrom the outside it looks like a plaza retail store, but from inside, it's somewhat of an oldschool pool-hall/bar. Nothing special to look at or anything, with an unimpressive atmosphere, but one of the dwindling places left to shoot some pool, and hang. They have a chinese food menu and also typical Canadian bar food as well, as I'm told the owners are Chinese themselves.
The woman bartending was gruff, and gave no appearance of caring about our presence. Didn't seem like a mean lady, just not trying to impress anyone.
There's 3 tables for pool, and some other seating areas. The tables are coin operated, at only $1.25 a game! That's a nice old value, but the pool cues I tested were all a little warped. There's also dart boards available. They have some weekly karaoke nights, and I'm told their busy times are late, from 11pm-1am sort or thing. There is a decent sized but plain patio area out front too.
Anyway I don't see a particular reason to go here, except for proximity if you want to play some pool, or an extremely casual meetup and bite to eat.
Little selection of beers/drafts, which is always disappointing, also.
So if you give zero cares and just want some place to go and you're nearby... maybe check it out.
Tuesdays after 5pm are wing nights, and every Saturday starting at...
Read moreI've been to Pops and Ruby's more times than I can count in the last 10 years, but this was the 1st since new ownership, and we were horriblly turned off. It took us 35 minutes to get a drink, and when we finally got to order, the bar tender was spilling almost all of them and just serving them as is. I felt all the rum ended up on the floor because it certainly wasn't in the drink! She was constantly rolling her eyes and talking about us to a colleague (assuming I couldn't hear her) and serving the people she knew before others. We started ordering pitchers of beer, just knowing how long it was going to take between drinks, but that didn't last either because something was horribly wrong with the taste of it. I've also always run a tab here because we generally close out the place. She wouldn't think of it, so between that and the insane amount of time it took to order, we left much earlier than expected. The karaoke was the only reason we stayed as long as we did. Do better,...
