We pulled in unexpectedly on our way home to comox from a hike. We were just going to grab a coffee but when we saw the menu we were pleasantly surprised especially when we saw the small pamphlet selling Korean take out with the most delicious looking menu! The food did not disappoint from the Korean bowls that were not overpowered spicy sauce and were perfectly balanced flavours and very fresh ingredients. The cheese cake was to die for and the plum tea was so refreshing and unique for me. As I was eating the food, I was too curious to know the story behind the man who prepared it because I knew there was something special there. Jaegseun (Jackson) Yoo told me that his grandfather had escaped northern Korea during the war and that his family had to use Korean cuisine as their only means to survive and make a living in China! I didn’t get a chance to ask much more about his story because he was getting busy and was working the place alone but I will definitely be back to try some of the other delicious looking items in the menu! I hope that Jaegseun has much success in Campbell river and I’d love to see him up his business with some more signage to let people know he sells bubble tea and Korean cuisine and maybe a chance to renovate to make the dine in experience even more cozy with some unique and personalized style and character 😉 that would bring the whole place together in the...
Read moreWhat happened! Was so excited to try an exciting and new Korean place (which was so desperately needed) in Campbell river!
My partner and I started by ordering the steamed mandu, caramelized kimchi + beef bibimbap and the plum Korean iced tea.
I appreciate the three complimentary appetizers, they were tasty.( Always my favourite part of Korean dining.) We received our drink at the same time as our food (about 20 minutes after ordering) and it was the incorrect flavour, that’s forgivable. I understand we all make mistakes.
But I was shocked when the steamed mandu was placed in front of me. A small little pulsating larvae was laying on top! like it had fallen from somewhere.
I have an intense fear of bugs and immediately had to have my partner remove the plate and take it to the manager. He started by saying “no?” And then asked if he could remake our food but at this point I was white in the face. I couldn’t even think about eating anything. (I have been kicking myself in the pants for not taking a photo, but it was not the first thing on my mind)
I will not be going back until hygiene improves or until these problems are addressed. I am horrified and disappointed. Really hope I can come back when...
Read moreWow, this place has the best Korean food my husband and I have ever had, and we have been to many Korean places in the Lower Mainland. Everything is delicious: the japchae, mandu dumplings, veggie pancake, mushroom and tofu army stew...and if you eat in, you also get very tasty side dishes as an added bonus :) The portions are generous, food is of an excellent quality, and the prices are very reasonable. Service is friendly. And bonus - it's open late on Mondays (pretty special for CR!). This place is so delicious and a true gem in the town but still feels largely undiscovered so please give it a try and spread the word. I also encourage the restaurant to advertise more widely and improve their signage so people know that Kung Fu Cafe is also a Korean restaurant in...
