Thankfully the White Spot at Pat Bat & Mt. Newton wasn’t open until 11:00 (what WS does that? Staff shortage maybe.) Forlorn in the parking lot, we searched the internet for "breakfast near me" & headed for this place. We were so glad we did. Classic, homey diner atmosphere. Felt like we were in the States where diners are an art. Only thing missing was the server doesn’t call you "Hon". Menu is massive, which can be worrisome cuz a cook can only do so much well. But everything seems to be a variation of the same ingredients, with simple variations & adds. All-in-all it’s creative & wholesome food. Hubs had the equivalent of a Nat's special, & he reported it was better. I had the 1/2 deli ham Benny which was good, but I should have got the full as was pretty small & to get double the amount for a couple dollars more would have been a better deal. What makes this place really good is the obvious use of fresh food….nothing seemed from frozen. Like from Mom's kitchen. I had to add more salt & squeeze the orange slice garnish on the hollandaise to zip up the flavour (could have used more lemon). Hence no 5th star. Great service with smiles. Food came quickly & coffee refills prompt. Seemed like lots of regulars in there that servers knew by name. The worst thing about the experience was the ride home. Hubs kept repeating, "That was a great meal." until I told him I’d already heard him the 20th time. Guess we'll be...
Read moreIs one "R" for Rude? My dad used to be a regular there, so much that he and his friend have a plaque with their names on one of the tables there. One of his requests before he passed is that we would go down (we live in Courtenay) , sit at that table and enjoy a lunch on him. I called two days prior and my reservation was recorded, when we got there the greeter knew nothing about it, another girl came out and knew nothing either so she went to ask. another lady came out who i am guessing was the supervisor as she appeared to be the oldest, she was very short with us and made sure we understood they don't take reservations. I told her that it was taken by phone, she asked for my dads name which i told here, she said there is no table with his name on it there, then said is it Rick and Charles i said Yes and she walked away, we were offered a seat elsewhere when it was our turn by the previous greeter. I am not a confrontational person and this was kind of a sentimental journey so i let it pass. The people at that other table left so i went over a took a picture of the plaque, when i went back to my seat she came over wiped down the table and sat some other people there. She could have saved this poor review by even offering us the table while we finished our stay. The place was cool, I had some questions i was hoping to have answered while was there about it, the food was good but we left with a bad taste...
Read moreI really like this restaurant and was excited to go on a rare day off. The hours are posted that it is open until 2:00. This is both online and on their door, and it says online that these hours were confirmed five weeks ago. However we drove out from Victoria, arriving at 1:30, and were not allowed in, told it was closed despite numerous people being in there. It was quite disappointing, and more so was being snapped at and hung up on when I called to inquire (politely) why the hours don’t match the sign or the google posting. The person I spoke to said the kitchen closes at 1:30, but when I suggested that should be updated on their hours as the actual closing time she said it’s not possible to change the time online. That makes no sense to me, as a business owner myself. You enter your business’s information on google, and even on the sign on your building. I’m feeling disappointed...
