Waddling Dog Pub — Restaurant in Central Saanich

Worst food and service.Would give no stars if that was an option. Thought we'd give it a try after a few years of not going here because of the horrible service and food we experienced at that time. Well things have definitely not changed. Ordered fish n chips and fish tacos. Waited 45min for our food, granted it was busy, ok fine, it happens. Actually thought it was a good sign, busy restaurant, equals good food etc. So don't mind the wait if its good. But when we got our food, there was barely any fish in the fish n chips mostly all batter, so sent it back and they were going to bring out a new piece of fish. Almost 20min later the waitress comes to the table to let us know the fish is on its way shortly, however in the meantime the fries are now cold so asked for new fries as well. Waitress agrees. Another 10min goes by and the fries come out and still NO FISH. Also our waitress didn't even have the guts to bring the fries to our table and had the bartender do it for her while she was watching our table/expression in the mirror behind the bar with her back towards us the whole time. Yes, I saw you. At this point we were extremely annoyed and told the bartender we are not paying for the fish n chips and want our bill so we can settle the remainder of the tab. The bartender came back with our bill and I told her I realize its not her fault and that it wasn't fair for the waitress to put her in the middle of this situation, but at the same time what happened was unacceptable, again while the waitress was still watching from the mirror. The bartender apologized explaining waitress had a hard day, I'm sorry, but I don't care. I'm a paying customer who had a very busy day, and just wanted to relax, have a drink or two and a nice dinner with my family which obviously didn't happen. So now my night was ruined. Thank you. Not to mention my family member had to go home and make himself a sandwich for dinner after waiting almost an hour and a half to eat, which is not good for a diabetic. We use to come here on a regular/weekly basis and it was great food and service (Shout out to Shawna, Sugar and Lisa) but since the change of ownership the food and service is not the same. Yet restaurants keep boosting prices and expecting you to pay and tip servers for what? The horrible food? The horrible service? FYI, a server is the person who should be doing quality control. If it doesn't look good or doesn't meet you expectations then you send it back and have the kitchen redo it and then bring it out to your customer, but not just slap it on a plate and hope the customer doesn't notice the crap you just served them . Well I have gone to this pub on and off for many years although it has been a while I have never had a experience like this! We went there for a late lunch, the place was 3/4 full inside and 2 tables outside, so some wait was expected! After 20 minutes we went to the bar to get some attention and the bar tender sent a server and she brought menu and drinks in a timely order but my drink was garbage( I'm not sure what it was but it wasn't what was ordered ) so when she came back I told her the drink was garbage and I would just have a beer! Her comment was OH OK! then we ordered food, after about 20 minutes I saw a old friend sitting at the bar facing the food pickup and kitchen and I went up and sat with him to say hi, I could see our food sitting under the heat lamps after about 5 minutes of watching the food sit there I stated timing it 18 more minutes cooks were pushing it forward to make room for other food witch the other waitress was collecting and serving to her customers . Our server walked up to it and looked at it twice and collected nothing but walked past it 5 times. when the sever finally brought our food I sent mine back as it was fish and chips and everyone else had a salad ( who wants cold fish and fries ) again I got OH OK! I decided to go sit with my friend again just to watch what was going on with my food, again I could see in the kitchen from this seat WOW wish I didn't see in there THE COOK ,no gloves wiping his nose with his hands then on his pant leg, NO washing of hands then starts handling food , then to top it off the owners son comes over to tell me I'm disrespectful to the server! because I told her about my bad drink and sent my food back! ( I talked to the server and explained that no disrespect was intended in any way! as I'm not that person, I even askes the people with me ( both female) if I disrespected her they said no! ) I realize this review reads like a rant but it's not just a statement of facts ! It's the same building in Quality Inn next to Shell gas station. We chose to eat at the restaurant instead as pub area which had high noise level and was also crowded though the menu is identical. Ordered the Roast beef dinner & fish & chips with appy Wed. night wings special $4.99/10 pcs. accompanied with selected dip sauces. Noticed the hip crowd had a great time in the pub while the older customers prefered to eat in the restaurant. Only 1 waitress working her back off to serve so many customers. Because of the specials offered daily in the evening the halls are crowded. I recommend W.D. management hire another help to reduce service time. The waitress was practically running all the time. Also noticed after customers leave she has no time to clear & clean up tables. It's not her fault you know she's just over worked. We had to pick up the menu folder from the counter & refill our coffee cups, self service. Each day of the week different specials are offered. The adv. is displayed on the neon bill board sinage next to the highway. From here is an update. We were in on Sunday evening the wait time to have our order served was over an hour. The single waitress, poor girl was running all over because the management's not hiring extra help, cost cutting to increase his profit! Yet the crowd was at least 80% full. It was so bad that even the kitchen help (dressed in white) served the customers food. The OWNER should have at least be around & HELP OUT in HIS business if he cared! It was that ridiculous.
