I’m not normally the person who writes a review, but today I choose to because today’s experience simply magnified what is going on in today’s economic climate.
So, I’ve been to the Moose Caboose food truck many times, and the food is ok; I wouldn’t go back if it wasn’t ok, but that’s NOT what this review is about.
When I got there today, I more or less knew what I was going to order, but still looked at the menu because it’s what you do while you’re waiting. I had to do a double take because I was shocked, as was the couple ahead of me who just finished paying $26 for 1 regular Poutine and 1 Chicken Fingers & Onion Rings (onion rings are .50c more than fries), and no drinks. The husband actually went back to his car to get 2 bottles of water.
I was at the Moose Caboose about a week or 2 ago, and as always, thought the prices were high at that point. There’s not a whole lot in the area as an alternative, so that’s where I sometimes go (or to Wow Wing in town, but they only open at 4). Here’s the “double take” part that I referenced above. From the last time I was there a week or 2 ago to today, the cheeseburger price jumped from about $6.25 or $6.50 to $7.25 or $7.50 (either way it was about $1 more), a regular fries went from $4 to $5, and the hot dog also went from $4 to $5. Presumably this happened from one day to the next. With taxes, I paid just under $19 for 1 cheeseburger, 1 (not 2) regular sized French fries and 1 hot hog (still no drinks).
When I ordered, I let the lady who served me know how ridiculous the prices were, especially since they were already expensive before. It is certainly not her fault as she only works there, but said that she would pass along my concerns. I still bought it because my wife was waiting for me back at the house. While I was waiting for my food, I chatted with the very nice couple who had ordered before me. We of course complained about how ridiculous the prices were, even how quickly a business can become popular and successful, but also how fast that success can become failure for decisions that are not well thought out.
Let’s put this into perspective shall we. The percentage increase from $4 to $5 (the old and new price for a regular fries or a hot dog) is 25%, yes, 25%. Did I say 25%. The beautiful thing about mathematics is that it can’t and doesn’t lie, so I can’t make this up. 4 x 1.25 = 5, or, 4 + 25% = 5. Is this a new business model or strategy that someone came up with that is supposed to be successful? It’s no secret that CPG companies (consumer packaged goods) love to gradually decrease package sizes while keeping prices the same or better yet, increase prices; but a blatant 25% increase from one day to the next? I buy the Maxwell House instant coffee (ya, so what, somebody has to), and the jar used to be 250 grams, but over a 2 to 4 month period both a 250 and 200 gram jar were present on the shelf, and then, wait for it, the 250 no longer around, but all for the same price and sometimes higher for the new de facto standard of 200 grams. Does Stats Can take that data into account when calculating inflation rates? I thought the price of gas was a lot, but if oil companies were to increase the price of regular gas by 25% in one shot when it was, let’s say, $1.29 per litre (and we all know what we think of oil companies and their constant ridiculous prices and price increases), the increased price would be $1.61. We’d all have even more to say about that wouldn’t we
So, to the person or people who own and manage the Moose Caboose, shame on you for this business practice. We all pay very high prices for EVERYTHING that we have to buy on a regular basis, with continual little increases on most things because they think we don’t notice it. The reality is that we’re all REALLY fed up with that because we do notice it. So when there are 25% increases on things that were already expensive, we notice...
Read moreThe food at the Moose Caboose is amazing! Fries are never soggy, even the ones that are loaded up with gravy and cheese! Everything is cooked perfection, condiments and toppings are always fresh! I did notice that prices have gone up, however with the new minimum wage hike, gas hikes and food increases, businesses have to change their prices in order to survive. Also, The Moose Caboose is hiring local students, residents and supporting our local economy. I think their prices are fair and I get great value for my dollar. You have to try the...
Read moreTHE ABSOLUTE BEST BURGER I HAVE EVER TASTED. I drove almost an hour just to come here and anytime I have work in the area, I don't even eat my own lunch, I have to get it. The quality is on another galaxy. Food and service is delivered with the best attitudes and smiles and a very friendly environment. But I must warn you, if you go once you'll be back so just make sure you know you might end up back more than once.
I'm telling you, if you're in the area,...
