Mr. Chips Fish Place — Restaurant in Greater Napanee

Don't let the unassuming exterior fool you; Mr. Chips Fish Place should NOT be overlooked.

Food: Excellent. I can personally vouch for the following: Haddock and Halibut: Comes out oily, but if you don't mind that, the fry is light and really lets the fish shine. Cooked to perfection. House tartar sauce pairs perfectly. Poutine: Tasty gravy, stretchy shredded cheese, and thick, well-cooked fries. I wish it was more evenly-coated, but it was still very good. Coleslaw: Lightly acidic dressing, not too thick, with a great slaw. Tasty! Cherry cheesecake: Very rich, not too overwhelmingly sweet, and balances well with the slightly tart cherry topping. I shared it, but wish I had ordered one for just me!

Price: worked out to about $30 per person for VERY good portions of the following: Halibut + Fries + Coleslaw + Pepsi + Cheesecake Haddock + Fries + Coleslaw + Iced Tea Halibut + Small poutine + Iced Tea + Cheesecake Haddock + Large poutine As you can see, lots of food at a reasonable price, especially considering fish is on the more expensive side of their menu. Everyone left full and satisfied.

Service: Friendly staff, both at your table and in the kitchen! Can order at the counter to go, or dine in; restaurant wasn't too busy, and food came within 10-15 minutes!

**REVISED February 2024 - An ownership change has brought this place way down. Corners have been cut everywhere until it it's just another mediocre eatery. A crying shame

This one of very few restaurants I was concerned about making it through the lockdowns, and boy am I happy to see the cars in the parking lot again when I drive by.

We have eaten here probably 10 times a year for the last 15-16 years, and it is everything you expect from a local family-owned community restaurant - great fish & chips, immaculately clean interior and mature career servers.

There is an extensive menu but I can only speak to the Fish & Chips - there's no reason to even consider anywhere else.

Let's put it this way - One is widely considered an expert at a task after completing 10,000 repetitions. It wouldn't surprise me to learn these folks have put out hundreds of thousands of orders in the years they have been here. Certain local establishments become institutions...

Wow. Ok, so I’ve been craving fish and chips for a while - so much so that I bought it two days in a row. I haven’t tried any fish and chips in Napanee, so I looked up what the best place was, and Mr. Chips caught my eye, but DARN, they’re closed Mondays. No matter, i still wanted fish and chips so I bought from the other big fish place in town. Now, I’m a Newfoundlander, so i know my fish, and I was quite impressed with them! They were pretty good.

Then I tried MR. CHIPS!

Even though I had just bought a feed of fish and chips yesterday , I thought I’d try the competition. All I can say is WOW! I don’t know what their secret is, but their fish is the best I’ve had in ages. Perfect batter (crispy, but not too thick), fish cooked to perfection , and the price was unbeatable. Best in the area, including Kingston. I will be coming back.
