Napanee Fish & Chips — Restaurant in Greater Napanee

The ambiance is simple but nice, clean and appropriate - big, beautiful stuffed marlin and other fish on the walls. A nice mixture of booths and tables. Fabulous high ceilings. Different sized tables, and not on top of one another. We went for a late lunch on Sunday (one of the few places actually opened on a Sunday!), around 2:30 p.m., and there were a few other tables occupied. We were encouraged to sit where we liked (not forced to sit in the same area as others for ease of service). There are large booths with reserved signs on them, held for larger groups if needed (would fit 8 easily). We were only 2, and as one of them was our preferred location, we asked if they mineded if we did sit in one, and they let us take a big booth, which was very kind. First time there, and we had to have fish and chips (but note, the menu has ample offerings - definitely something for everyone here!!). The Haddock was fantastic!! Huge portions (of everything). 2 big, lightly coated (perfect consistency and flavour), thick, and fresh, beautifully white pieces of fish. Nice and light in flavour - not "fishy". Great fries - worth the splurge. And the Greek salad too was incredible- loads of feta and other ingredients (they didn't skimp). At $20.99 it might seem a little on the expensive side for fish and chips but, worth it - one plate could have been shared by 2 most certainly, but we were able to share our different sides and got a nice, recyable take-away container to put our leftovers in (enough for another meal!). A lovely tasting tartar sauce accompanied the fish. They have white and malt vinegar bottles, and S&P already on the tables. And their house wine was a nice compliment to the fish - Peller (ON) Sauvignon Blanc, and at $5.99 for a 5oz glass, we had to! (And their litre option was $15.99! Amazing prices). The server was kind, and the food didn't take too long to come. Haven't been here in well over a year or so, but decided to give them another try today with some friends. Still somewhat disappointed with the fish. Not sure if the fish sits in water until it's ready to be battered and it just doesn't get drained well enough, but it had a spot where it was very watery. Otherwise cooked quite well. The Greek salad I got with it was rather soaked in dressing and quite limp, not sure if the lettuce was fresh. Have to say they were quite attentive though in asking how the food was, as they are aware that they have gotten some bad reviews and say they are trying to improve. Maybe bad mouthing the owner of Mr Chips the original Owner of Napanee Fish and Chips in front of customers in your establishment, would be a start to improving business 🥴 Just sayin' I think I'd order a sandwich next time, if we return. One reason we haven't come in a while is because we'd been told as a large group coming from church as we did many Sunday's that they wouldn't accommodate us sitting together, a couple years back, and then started putting a charge on the bill for large groups, that ended us all going. Just thought I'd explain why you lost a lot of our business as a whole. Hopefully things have changed in this regard. Saw today you allowed a fairly large group to sit together. Happy to see that. The food was like any fish and chip place around here not bad but not high-end fancy. But that's not the problem that we struggled with. There were flies all over our table all over our food from the time we arrived until we left. The waitress barely showed us any attention and if we needed anything we had to get her attention. She took care of numerous other tables orders food and checks before she got around two coming to ask if we needed anything. Did everything she could to ignore us and when we confronted her with the issues turn it around on us. I specifically asked to speak with someone above her and she said they were on vacation. And that she was the closest to manager but then proceeded to complain to the Cook about what we said and continued to lie to him by saying we refuse to pay our bill. We wanted to express our disappointment of her service and the frustrations of the bugs on our food and she tried to make us out as the bad guys. we were given a discount but we will never go back in case we run in with her again. if you decide to eat from here I suggest you...
