After Jeff, the restaurant manager reached out to try and make this right, we made another visit to the keg this past weekend and it was AMAZING! Service and food were excellent. Our server, Christine was spot on with attentiveness and service. We will be back!!!!! NYE Dinner A Bit Of A Bust!

I know it was New Years Eve and probably one of the busiest nights of the year, however, we were rather disappointed by our overall experience the other day.

We were seated to our table quickly which was nice. This was our first visit since the renos, and to be honest, first in almost 10 years! I am not sure if The Keg has always had TV’s, but going out for a lovely meal, with “the game” playing in the background was a bit of a turnoff.

My wineglass was filthy, so that was a bit of a bad start. We ordered two bottles of wine for our table from the get go, but our server broke the cork in the bottle, and was struggling to get it open. We offered to help her, but she took the bottle away from the table and returned with it opened. I should note that she never came by to refill our glasses throughout the meal - we did it ourselves for both bottles.

I ordered a Keg Classic which comes with a salad as a starter, and the rest of the table ordered their apps too. But they brought my salad about 10 minutes before the other apps which was weird. I was waiting to share this and split my husband’s app with him, so I just left it there and waited for the other (hot apps) to arrive. One of our apps was the mushrooms neptune, and those were good. The other was the Gruyere Mushroom Dip. The bread it came with was a lovely golden-brown colour, but when we tore into it, it was actually raw dough. So we waited for our server to come back, but she was busy with other tables, so it was about 15 minutes later or so before she returned, and by then we were all done the other apps. She was nice about it and said she would replace it, but since everyone else was done, we said no, that was ok, just to remove it from the bill. She did give us a free piece of cake to take home to make up for that. No lie, about 1 minute after she offered to replace the appetizer, our mains arrived…which was odd, because I am not sure how she would have replaced the app if our mains were here. They hadn’t cleared our appetizer plates yet, so there was a bit of a clunky shuffle to make room for the other plates.

The food was alright, but not amazing. We were also surprised that we were never offered any of the sauces to go with our steaks, so when the food came, we quickly added a sauce which she was quick to bring to the table. My Medium steak was overdone, and the veggies that came with it were just thrown on the plate with a few of the “ends” of the broccoli stems, and you could tell the mushrooms and broccoli weren’t prepared super fresh, or at least, both were dry, so I assumed they weren’t fresh.

We ordered a cappuccino and a specialty coffee for dessert – both were barely warm. By then, we had already had so many issues that we didn’t even bother to say anything to our server. We just paid our bill and got out of there.

For a table of 4 who spent about $500 – I expect better....

The ambiance is warm and inviting, and the food speaks for itself. The prime rib paired with garlic mashed potatoes was flavorful and hearty, while the teriyaki sirloin was cooked to near perfection, bursting with savory goodness. The crème brûlée was a delightful way to end the meal, with its rich, creamy texture and perfectly caramelized topping. Even the complementary sourdough bread was fresh, soft, and a great start to the dining experience.

The vegetables, beets and beans, were a standout. Cooked to a tender crisp, they added a fresh and vibrant touch to the meal. The garlic mashed potatoes were creamy and well seasoned, adding a comforting element to the plates.

Now for the service. it was nothing short of exceptional. When my steak initially arrived medium instead of well done, I was disappointed, but the manager, Matthew, stepped in immediately to rectify the issue. He ensured a fresh steak was prepared and went above and beyond to check that everything else was to my satisfaction. Our server, Monica, was attentive and friendly, adding to the overall positive experience. Their professionalism and dedication to excellent customer service were outstanding.

However, there’s room for improvement in presentation. When the replacement steak was brought out, it was served on an empty, oversized plate, which felt stark and clunky. A touch of greenery or a smaller, more elegant plate could elevate the visual appeal, reflecting the level of sophistication expected from a fine dining establishment like The Keg.

Lastly, while the food and service were top notch, the cleanliness at the entrance could use more attention. The mats could have been better maintained, which would align with the otherwise polished experience.

Overall, The Keg continues to deliver on its reputation for great food and exceptional service. With minor adjustments to presentation and atmosphere, it has the potential to truly shine as a top tier dining destination in Hamilton. The little hiccoughs did not take away from it being a 5 star and comes highly recommended by me.

Update 11.04.22 Erika O was absolutely amazing. She certainly is proud of her tenureship with The Keg and it definitely shows. The Filet Wellington was stunning. BEST STEAK I've ever had. Food and service was so amazing that I have no choice but to return. Oh. My friend ate the birthday candle by mistake. Lmao. It was so funny.

122923 We once again had the pleasure of having Manitoba Jenny (MJ) as our server. MJ takes the guest experience to a whole new level. MJ's exemplary service makes you feel like you are the only one there. She has provided excellent customer service and enhances any evening out. She's the reason, the Upper James location is the only one I visit. MJ, you are an amazing person and those around you are so blessed to have you as part of their lives. With your cheerful and attentive personality, you create a great dinning experience and it's amazing to see that there are still people out there that have pride for what they do.
