Kenji Japanese Restaurant — Restaurant in King

It's really unfortunate that I have to give such a low rating, however, this restaurant ruined my evening. My husband and I found this spot one day on our way home from out of town and absolutely loved it. The food was amazing, atmosphere was nice, service was friendly. We loved it so much, despite it being 40 minutes away, we decided to make reservations for valentines day here. When we called, we were told that they didn't take reservations, which was fine as the place is rather small inside, but imagine my disappointment when we drove 40 minutes, were asked if we had reservations, saw multiple reservations on the other tables, and were treated so rudely by the flustered waitress because we "didn't have reservations" I'm not sure why this happened or why I was told I couldn't make reservations after seeing they clearly could be made. The first valentine's dinner in many years due to Covid, and this was how we were treated here....

Great Food but needs new Take Out Containers. I absolutely love the food of Kenji Sushi in King City. I have dined in and order take out a considerable amount of times. The staff is efficient, knowledgeable and polite. It is a very casual place, so nothing fancy, just great food. However, Kenji needs to replace their current takeout containers. The containers collapse onto each other and sauce ends up dripping and you get quite a mess in your plastic bag. It just doesn't work. I currently have to immediately take the containers out of the bag and lay them flat in my cooler which I now take with me when I pick up food. My husband and I ordered delivery from Kenji and we had high hopes based on the reviews and the pictures posted online. What we got delivered was truly disappointing. The pressed sushi was drenched in sauce and even the jalapeño slices garnished on top looked wilted. The sushi was the worst I have ever had - all the fish slices on rice looked old and dry and that’s exactly what it tasted like. The rice was not flavored at all for the rolls so even the California roll tasted bland.

The small salad that came along with everything was probably the best but how can you go wrong with fresh lettuce, cucumber and red onion… if they’re fresh?
